Australian Cup Nominations - Who is running in the Australian Cup?

  • Rekindling heads the entries for the $1.5 million Group 1
  • Johannes Vermeer and Almandin also entered
  • Humidor will be the defending champion

Melbourne Cup winner Rekindling is one of 53 nominations for the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 10.

Rekindling won the Melbourne Cup in November as a three-year-old for trainer Joseph O'Brien, but it will be Liam Howley he runs for should be accept for the $1.5 million event on Super Saturday.

The fellow Lloyd Williams-owned Johannes Vermeer, the horse Rekindling defeated in a thrilling finish in the Race That Stops A Nation, is also in line to contest the Australian Cup along with stablemate Almandin, the 2016 Melbourne Cup winner.

Humidor is the defending champion and is one of three Darren Weir-trained Group 1 winners in the nominations with Gailo Chop and Tosen Stardom also entered by the champion trainer.

Murray Baker's star New Zealand mare Bonneval could bid to add to her Group 1 haul in the race, as could Ventura Storm, one of 13 horses entered by David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig.

Victoria Derby runner-up Sully is one of 14 three-year-olds entered into the race.
