Weights will be released for the 2017 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on Tuesday, September 12.

Check back after Tuesday, September 12, to see the weights for the Caulfield Cup.

Latest Caulfield Cup weights news (2016)

Racing Victoria (RV) Executive General Manager – Racing, Greg Carpenter released the weights on Tuesday morning and has handicapped Aidan O’Brien’s Order Of St George and Highland Reel with 58kg.

The handicap has already produced a casualty with leviathan owner Lloyd Williams indicating Order Of St George is highly unlikely to contest the race after receiving top weight.

Four-time Group 1 winner Preferment is next in weights at 56.5kg, the same handicap issued to reining Melbourne Cup champion Prince Of Penzance.

Victoria Derby (2500m) winner Tarzino will be asked to carry 54kg as he attempts to become the fourth horse to complete the Derby-Caulfield Cup double on October 15, as has Australian Derby (2400m) winner Tavago.

“Tarzino and Tavago have been allocated 54kg on the back of really impressive wins in the Victoria Derby and ATC Derby respectively,” Carpenter said.

“Tarzino is aiming to emulate the likes of Elvstroem (2004), Manfred (1925) and Poseidon (1906) by winning the Caulfield Cup the season after taking out the Victoria Derby, while Tavago looks to retrace the path Mongolian Khan took in 2015 by winning the ATC Derby-Caulfield Cup double.

“With an international rating of 121, Highland Reel is the highest-rated galloper in 2016 among the 171 Caulfield Cup nominations, and he shares the status of Caulfield Cup topweight with his stablemate Order Of St George, who was very impressive winning the Irish St Leger in 2015 and Ascot Gold Cup earlier this year over extended journeys.”

While Order Of St George is unlikely and Highland Reel is left at the top of the weights, Carpenter pointed out that the top handicapped horses have been quite successful of late.

“In recent years we have seen the better performed horses come to the fore in the BMW Caulfield Cup, with two of the past four renewals won by a horse carrying the top weight of 58kg in the international entrants Dunaden (2012) and Admire Rakti (2014),” he said.

“Prince of Penzance will hope to emulate Dunaden and Viewed (2009) who won the Caulfield Cup the year after winning the Melbourne Cup. They carried 58kg and 57kg respectively when winning their Caulfield Cups.

“Aidan O’Brien’s Northern Hemisphere three-year-old Idaho, who is guaranteed a start in the Caulfield Cup thanks to his brilliant win in the Great Voltiguer Stakes, has been allocated 53kg, which is three kilograms below weight-for-age benchmark.”

First acceptances for the Caulfield Cup are taken at 12 noon (AET) on Tuesday, September 6.
