Cox Plate Nominations: Winx heads 79 runners after first acceptances

  • Winx aiming for third consecutive win in the Cox Plate

First acceptances for the 2017 Cox Plate (2040m) were made on Tuesday, September 12, with dual champion Winx headlining 79 contenders remaining.

Two-time champion Winx heads 79 contenders for the 2017 Cox Plate (2040m) with 10 international runners in contention to take on the star mare at Moonee Valley on Saturday, October 28.

The Chris Waller-trained Winx will be bidding to complete a hat-trick of wins in the Ladbrokes-sponsored Spring Carnival feature, which is worth $3.05 million this year.

A total of 79 horses have accepted for the Cox Plate at the first acceptances stage with Winx the star attraction once again.

The possible international runners taking on Winx include five Aidan O'Brien-traned runners - Deauville, Cliffs Of Moher, Johannes Vermeer, Lancaster Bomber and Taj Mahal - while Godolphin trainers Saeed Bin Suroor (Prize Money and Best Solution) and Charlie Appleby (Folkswood) also have entries.

The other internationals are Jane Chapple-Hyam's Kaspersky and Riven Light for Willie Mullins.

“The build up to this year’s Cox Plate is like none we have ever seen before with Winx shooting for an historic third consecutive victory to join Kingston Town as the only three-time winner of the race,” Racing Victoria Executive General Manager Racing - Greg Carpenter said.
“It will be fantastic to see Winx return to the amphitheatre of The Valley, and we look forward to seeing her take on a host of top class international and domestic competitors in what is shaping as one of the great highlights of the Spring Racing Carnival.
“We’re continuing to liaise with the international stables to see which horses will travel down under, while we’re also eager to see which of the 18 Australian three-year-olds can emerge over the next month to provide a challenge to Winx.”

The 79 acceptors include 22 three-year-olds, four of those being internationals runners - Best Solution, Taj Mahal, Lancaster Bomber and Cliffs Of Moher. Among the three-year-olds are home hopes Catchy, the Blue Diamond Stakes winner, and Royal Symphony, who remains unbeaten for Tony McEvoy.
