Cox Plate Tips 2017: 3 big priced place chances and best Winx odds

  • Will Winx make it three in a row?
  • 3 value Place chances
Hugh Bowman riding Winx wins the Cox Plate

If all goes to plan this spring, Australia's favourite racehorse, Winx, will be aiming to emulate the deeds of the mighty Kingston Town when she lines up for her third Cox Plate (2040m) victory at Moonee Valley on Saturday, October 28.

And quite frankly, if trainer Chris Waller can produce the mare anywhere near best, she’ll simply win.

But for punters, there will be two approaches:

1. Find the best available odds for Winx now and accept that the price is better than bank interest.
 Or
  2. Find something at big odds now with the possibility Winx may not make it to the Cox Plate.

The latter would be unjust, as the mare deserves to sit alongside the horse many regard as the greatest ever.

So here are some options:

3 alternatives to backing Winx

YANKEE ROSE to place ($10 with Unibet)

As far as value goes, this looks like the way to play. Yankee Rose showed her class as a two-year-old finishing runner-up in the Golden Slipper and then taking out the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ (1400m). As a three-year-old, she became the first filly to win the Spring Champion (2000m) and then finished 3rd behind Winx in the Cox Plate. She’ll come back bigger and stronger as a four-year-old mare, and if there is anything from the Australian racing ranks that may be able to push Winx, it’s Yankee Rose. While I’d be hesitant to take Winx on, $10 for the place looks very attractive.

SCALES OF JUSTICE to place ($7.25 with UBET)
Trainer Lindsey Smith has trained some nice horses in his time and he ranks this bloke up there with Black Heart Bart who was trained by Vaughn Sigley in Perth before heading to Darren Weir’s stable. He won the Railway Stakes (1600m) and was narrowly defeated in the Kingston Town Classic (1800m), and while he’s yet to be tested beyond that distance, it doesn’t look beyond him. Smith is keen to tackle the Cox Plate with him if successful over the distance this campaign.

ALMANDIN to place ($14 UBET)
Hall of Fame owner Lloyd Williams is a great believer in winning the Melbourne Cup with horses that are well in at the weights – and being the reigning champ, Almandin will carry more weight in 2017, and it wouldn’t surprise if the quality import is targeted at the Cox Plate instead. This is a race Williams is desperate to win, and Almandin may be his best chance.
