Cox Plate Tips - another Place chance for Value

  • Winx can win four in a row?
  • Where is the Place value?

So far this spring, I’ve tipped D’Argento, Egg Tart and Youngstar to run Placings behind Winx so we could find some value in each of her races.

We got the cash on each occasion with odds of $1.70, $3.20 and $3.50 respectively, but where can we find some Place value in Saturday’s Cox Plate (2040m) and make it four collects in a row behind Winx?

That’s assuming the superstar mare wins her fourth Cox Plate in a row while also racking up her 29th consecutive victory.

Benbatl is the obvious 2nd pick following his brilliant first-up win in the Caulfield Stakes (2000m), and he improves second-up, but at $1.40 for the Place, I’d rather have something on Winx for the win at $1.25.

Winx set a new Moonee Valley 2040m record last year when winning the Cox Plate in 2:02.940, and her performance the previous year was on a sticky, Soft track in 2:06.350.

Savvy Coup was ultra-impressive winning the Livamol Classic on a Soft track in 2:04.39 last start, and she should be respected on that effort considering she was so dominant.

Humidor got close to Winx last year but follows a different programme this year, however, his stablemate, Kings Will Dream, follows an identical path having contested the PB Lawrence (1400m), Memsie Stakes (1400m), Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m), Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and Caulfield Cup (2400m) in his lead-up.

The Caulfield Cup was billed as Humidor’s ultimate assignment last year, yet he ran a personal best in the Cox Plate, and I’m wondering if Kings Will Dream is set to do the same thing after a 6th placing in what was declared as his target race (Caulfield Cup).

He was only 1.75 lengths from Winx in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and meets her 2.5kg worse at the weights.

Humidor will be flashing home again, and there are some questions around Rostropovich’s form, and I don’t think D’Argento can turn the tables or get any closer to Benbatl after finishing 2.65 lengths from his last start.

Avilius has won four in a row and has strong form beating Brimham Rocks who then ran 2nd behind Yucatan, and he fought gamely to win the Bart Cummings (2500m) last start – he’s rock-hard-fit and could run a big race too.

Kings Will Dream gets blinkers for the first time and his previous win in the Mornington Cup gives me confidence considering Mornington is quite similar to Moonee Valley.

Kings Will Dream also maps to sit right behind Benbatl and get a nice tow into the home bend where he can ease out and challenge while the mare sails past them three wide.
