Cox Plate Tips 2017: Will Winx complete the hat-trick?

  • Will Winx make it three in a row?

It’s hard to see anything getting near the mighty mare, Winx, in Saturday’s Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley, but we can find value with a special market.

Ladbrokes Australia have opened a ‘Winx Out’ market for the Cox Plate, so let’s pretend Winx isn’t going around and try and find the winner.

I think we may see the same result as last year with Winx streaming clear from a tough Godolphin runner.

However, in 2017, it’s not Hartnell chasing gallantly for 2nd place but the Charlie Appleby-prepared Folkswood.

Traditionally, the Cranbourne Cup (2025m) would be one of the last races you would see used as a Cox Plate lead-up, but Appleby is no mug, and he knew exactly what he was doing targeting an easier option before heading to the main event.

He’s travelled half-way around the world with this tough son of Exceed And Excel who is out of the unraced Galileo mare Magic Nymph, and the last thing Appleby would have wanted is a gut-buster before the Cox Plate.

Kerrin McEvoy’s ride in the Cranbourne Cup was not only a 10 out of 10, but it was the perfect Cox Plate trial.

He got the horse settled into a nice rhythm, came out at the 600m mark and started a wide looping run around the field before levelling up to the leader at the top of the straight, gaining the upper hand with 100m to go and riding him out hands and heels.

The Cox Plate is generally run in similar fashion around a similarly tight-turning track with a short straight.

Kaspersky (barrier 2) looks the likely leader with Gailo Chop (4) going up to apply the pressure, and with Seaburge (1) and Hardham (3) likely to settle back a bit further, McEvoy can land right behind the leaders with Folkswood.

McEvoy and the Godolphin team have publicly stated Appleby left a bit of room for improvement with Folkswood going into the Cranbourne Cup, and now that he’s up to peak fitness, McEvoy will be looking to pour the pressure on from the 800m mark and make it a true staying test.

Winx will come even wider and set sail to win by the length of the straight, but Folkswood should be tough enough to keep grinding away and hold off the remaining challengers.

He looks a pretty safe bet for the place at $2.40, but I’ll be taking him in the ‘Winx Out’ market at a juicy $5.

Alternatively, if you want to back Winx to complete the hat-trick and match Kingston Town's record, you can claim a MASSIVE $5.00 available for new customers at TopBetta (excl NSW, VIC, SA and WA).

Cox Plate Tips 2017: Will Winx complete the hat-trick?

If all goes to plan this spring, Australia's favourite racehorse, Winx, will be aiming to emulate the deeds of the mighty Kingston Town when she lines up for her third Cox Plate (2040m) victory at Moonee Valley on Saturday, October 28.
