Kingston Town Classic Date: When is the 2017 Kingston Town Classic?

  • The Kingston Town Classic is held annually at Ascot in December
  • It carries $1 million in prizemoney
  • Trainer Grant Williams prepared first, second and fourth in 2015

The 2017 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) will be held at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, December 9.

The Kingston Town Classic was first won by Family Of Man during its inaugural running in 1976 - it was then known as the Marlboro 50,000 when contested over 1800m.

It is the youngest of Perth’s three summer Group 1s but many great gallopers have been victorious in the race.

There have been many facelifts to the race with its race name being one of those.

From 1976-79 the race was known as the Marlboro 50,000 and was changed to the Western Mail Classic in 1980 and held that name until 1983.

From 1984-87 it was named the Rothwells Stakes, from 1988-91 the Winfield Stakes, 1992-94 the Beat Diabetes 2 Stakes, 1995-2006 the Fruit ‘N’ Veg Stakes until picking up its current name in 2007.

As well as a few name changes the race has endured a couple of distance changes throughout the years and in 1999 and 2000 the race was run over 1600m and in 2003 was run over 2000m when held at Belmont Park.

As mentioned earlier, 70s superstar Family Of Man won the first Kingston Town Classic in 1976 and would claim the race two years later in 1978.

Three horses have managed to go back-to-back, with Summer Beau (1996-97), Old Comrade (2000-01) and Playing God (2010-11) achieving the stunning double.

Family of Man (1976 and 1978) and Niconero (2006 and 2008) managed to win two Kingston Town Classics but not in consecutive years.

The 1800m event has been won by some of Australia’s best gallopers with Family Of Man, triple Cox Plate winner Kingston Town (1982), who it is now named after, Military Plume (1986), Vo Rogue (1988) and Better Loosen Up (1989) being the most popular winners.

It was most recently won by unbeaten three-year-old filly Perfect Reflection who defeated stablemate Delicacy in a close finish in 2015. Trainer Grant Williams also prepared the fourth-placed Neverland.

Kingston Town Classic form usually comes via the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m), Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) and the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m), all staged earlier during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.

Runners may head onto the Group 2 CB Cox Stakes (2100m) after contesting the Kingston Town Classic. Delicacy won the CB Cox Stakes following her runner-up performance in the Kingston Town Classic in 2015.
