The second round of acceptances for Tuesday week’s Melbourne Cup (3200m) have been taken on Monday leaving 47 stayers in contention for the $7.3 million showpiece.

11 of the 15 internationally-trained horses among acceptances are guaranteed a start, including race favourite and impressive Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) winner Yucatan and Caulfield Cup (2400m) winner Best Solution.

Notable withdrawals include the Darren Weir-trained Humidor (3rd in the Cox Plate), Kings Will Dream (injured in the Cox Plate) and Big Duke, as well as Caulfield Cup runner-up Homesman, The Taj Mahal and Egg Tart.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have paid up for dominant Ladbrokes Stakes (2000m) winner Thinkin’ Big and last week’s Geelong Cup (2400m) winner Runaway, while Lindsay Park will also push on with last Saturday’s Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) winner Ventura Storm.

Saturday’s Group 3 Hotham Handicap (2500m) at Flemington offers a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup and is the last chance for those out of the top 24 to guarantee a start on the first Tuesday in November.

Final acceptances for the Melbourne Cup will be taken at 4.30pm (AEST) on Saturday, November 3, 2018.
