Railway Stakes Barrier Draw: Silverstream cops outside gate

  • Black Heart Bart will need to break 50-year weight carrying record.
  • Scales Of Justice aims for back-to-back wins.

There was no luck at the Railway Stakes barrier draw for Perth’s leading rider William Pike who will jump from the outside gate in the capacity field of 16.

The ‘Wizards’ mount, Silverstream was allocated barrier 20 in Saturday’s $1 million Group 1 race, but will start from gate 16 as he aims for three wins in a row following narrow victories in the Northerly Stakes (1400m) and Waroa-Lee Steere Stakes (1400m).

The Waroa-Lee Steere is traditionally one of the best lead-up races to the Railway, and in 2017, Great Shot, Scales Of Justice and Disposition come through that race having finished 2nd, 3rd and 5th respectively.

Reigning Railway Stakes champion Scales Of Justice goes up 4.5kg from last year’s win and will have to carry 57.5kg and has come up with barrier 13.

If the emergencies don’t get a run, Scales Of Justice will come into gate 10, while the David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Sovereign Nation would come into the highly successful barrier 12.

Four horses have saluted from barrier 12 in the past eight years and that should give hope to the Lindsay Park team who won this race in 1989 with Better Loosen Up.

Former Perth galloper and five-time Group 1 winner Black Heart Bart has come up with barrier 8 while stablemate Ulmann fared well in barrier 5.
