Race 3 - 3:05PM WHITTINGTON @ GRANDVIEW STUD Class 6 Handicap (1350 METRES)
This class six is real open affair with several runners having strong claims. The Helen Page-trained EXCALIBRATOR is one of those and looks good value in this field. Page has spaced the gelding’s races of late, giving him three to four weeks break between runs and seems to be paying off. After a long absence, eight months to be precise, the Hinchinbrook five-year-old took a just a couple of runs to find his feet again. Two starts back, he finished third at the Gold Coast in class 5 company behind Legal Counsel where he conceded the winner 5kgs that day. Then last start, he dropped to 55kgs in a BM80 at the same track and fought like a tiger to end up winning the 1400m event, turning the tables on Legal Counsel who finished second. He is coming off a barrier trial at the Gold Coast last week which he won comfortably. Daniel Griffin rode him in that trial and is in the saddle today. The speedmap paints an interesting picture with all of his rivals drawing wide and will have to do some work to get across. Getting caught wide today will be disastrous with the rail out 8 metres. This is the main reason why I am running with Excalibrator who has drawn the fence here and looks to get the gun-run while the others have to deal with their wides draws. He looks great value here in a seven-horse field and gets his chance to break his Ipswich drought.
