Previous Newcastle Tips:

March 9

Race 4 - 3:19PM BUILDCERT CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
The barrier (12) has made it a bit tougher for LEATHERHEAD, but he’s got the strongest form in this race and will be suited third-up as he gets out to the mile. Previous form around this trip includes a 5th placing behind Tavirun over 1500m at Moonee Valley, and then a 4th placing behind Savoie over 1800m at Flemington. Two trials and two 1400m runs have him fit, and he should be running on strongly.
Result (scratched)

Race 8 - 6:05PM JPM PLASTERING BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
The Kris Lees-trained THINK FREE returned in good order with a win at Scone over 1300m, and she should continue to improve. She was 3rd on debut and then finished 2nd to Herzegovina who was 3rd to Girl Tuesday and Holy Reign in the start prior. Think Free has drawn to get a soft run around midfield and if Andrew Gibbons can find a clear passage home, she can finish best.
Result (1st - $2.30)

February 16

Race 4 - 2:59PM WEBBER ARCHITECTS MAIDEN PLATE (1880 METRES)
This is an easier assignment for the Chris Waller-trained KING OF SEAS who I blackbooked from the trials and have been with for two runs. He worked home well to finish 2.6 lengths behind stablemate Belladeel first-up over 1400m and then finished 1.2 lengths from Elusive Nature over 1550m at Canterbury. Being by Jakkalberry, he’s sure to improve over more ground, and with a couple of fitness runs under his belt, the 1880m trip looks ideal.
Result (2nd)

Race 9 - 6:10PM HUNTER H20 BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
HOSTWIN SHADOW impressed enough in a recent barrier trial to attract the services of Blake Shinn first-up over 1000m at Kembla Grange in what looks a good form race. He led most of the way but was caught late and just looked a run short. He goes up to 1200m second-up and is surely worth sticking with in what looks a weaker race.
Result (unplaced)

February 2

Race 1 - 1:49PM AUSSIE HAMILTON MAIDEN PLATE (1860 METRES)
OAKFIELD ELLA meets Kingston Heath 2kg better at the weights from when they met last which was two starts ago for Oakfield Ella and last start for Kingston Heath. The former has raced since and was far from disgraced finishing 4th and now faces the one-week back-up, while the latter hasn’t raced for a month – Oakfield Ella should come out on top. Alier has been running inferior times and the form around Estroverto is questionable. Oakfield Ella is at peak fitness and despite being unplaced in eight runs to date, she can break through here.
Result (unplaced)

Race 2 - 2:24PM HUNTER VALLEY GRANITE AND MARBLE CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
Looking for an ‘Oakfield’ double for trainer Damien Lane with OAKFIELD CAPTAIN coming off a strong 3rd placing behind Judge Judi who goes around as favourite at Canterbury on Friday night. Like the stablemate in the previous event, Oakfield Captain comes into this 1600m assignment fifth-up and at peak fitness. Same grade and same weight, but this looks a bit easier and his two wins and three 2nd placings have all been at this track.
Result (4th)

January 26

Race 2 - 2:49PM LAMBTON LAW 4YO & UP MAIDEN HANDICAP (1150 METRES)
FIRST READING drops back in trip here after trying to lead all the way over 1350m and being collared late by Ikara Miss who has franked the form with a fast-finishing 3rd placing in a Class 1 event at Kembla Grange last Saturday. The Gabrielle Englebrecht-trained mare should be at absolute peak fitness fourth-up, and another bold front-running display we see her prove hard to pass.
Result: Won ($2.40)

Race 7 - 5:59PM JIM VELICH MEMORIAL CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1350 METRES)
Looking for the John Sargent-trained DEPENDABLE to charge home from the rear off a hot speed here. The six-year-old Pendragon gelding has only one win to his name from 16 starts, but first-up last campaign he charged home from the rear to finish 2nd behind Moss Trip who went on to win at Group 3 level and was tested in the Group 1 Tatts Tiara. Sargent has given him two trials, and he was ridden out in his first indicating he needed fitness, and his second trial was more encouraging when finishing 2nd to the speedy Slow Burn. He would have come on with two weeks between the trial and his first-up run, and this is a winnable assignment.
Result: Unplaced
