Oaks Day Tips - 2 best bets for Flemington on Kennedy Oaks Day

Aaron Hamilton in Free Tips 7 Nov 2018
  • Harbour Grey can finally claim grey's race.
  • Suggested stake: Harbour Grey (1 unit to win), Written Choice (1 unit to win, 1 unit to Place)
  • Confidence rating: Harbour Grey 92%, Written Choice 80%

Another big meeting at Flemington on Thursday with the Group 1 Kennedy Oaks (2500m) being the feature on the nine-race card.

There are a couple that I’m keen on and one is at double figure odds and can run a cheeky race provided he adapts to the Flemington straight.

Here are my two best bets for Oaks Day:

Race 4 - 2:15PM Off The Track Subzero Handicap (1400 METRES)
HARBOUR GREY finished 3rd in this race in 2015, 4th in 2016, 2nd in 2017, and he looks set to finally break through as a seven-year-old. He only had three runs last spring and then one run in the autumn, and without a doubt, he’s been set for Thursday’s contest. He resumed with a fast finishing win at Geelong over 1200m, which is the same lead-up race he has used for the past two years. However, his last start win suggests he’s going better than ever, as it was the biggest weight he’s carried in the Geelong event and he had never won it before. That run has him cherry ripe, and the abbreviated autumn campaign could have been the freshen-up he needed to perform at his best in the Grey’s race.

Race 6 - 3:35PM Absolut Stakes (1000 METRES)
I’m willing to stick with WRITTEN CHOICE at big odds here after he’s saluted for us twice in a row as my best of the day. Two starts back he won the 955m race at Moonee Valley in 55.22 beating Roddandtodd and Prezado, and the latter of that pair has form around horses that are much shorter in the market for Thursday’s sprint contest. Last start Written Choice improved by three lengths to run 0:54.77 at the same track and trip, and he may still have a bit of upside being fourth-up. He’s been bustled out of the gates in his last two but has still dug deep late, and although this is his first go down the Flemington straight, I think he’ll be suited as he won’t have to be driven early and jockey Stephen Baster can let him build momentum and maintain it to the line. He’s a very powerful son of Written Tycoon, and I think he’s over the odds at $21.
