Racing Bet of the Day November 19 - 2 best bets for Mornington

Aaron Hamilton in Free Tips 19 Nov 2018
  • Suggested Stake: Negasi - 3 units to win, Cherief's Choice - 2 units to win
  • Confidence rating: Negasi 95%, Cherief's Choice 90%

This week’s Victorian racing action kicks off at Mornington Racecourse with an eight-race card being held on a Good 4 surface.

There are two runners in particular that look perfectly placed to win, and while both are short-priced favourites, they will prove extremely hard to beat in their respective events.

Here are my two best bets for Mornington on Monday:

Race 2 - 2:00PM Progress Signs Highweight Handicap (2450 METRES)
Despite being a maiden last start, the David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained NEGASI tackled BM58 company and proved far too strong at this track and distance. He won by 3.75 lengths and ran 2:32.05 which was 30 lengths quicker than the maiden event held one race earlier. The quick time was determined by early speed, and it was Negasi pouring on the early pressure as he drew wide and had to work early to get outside the leader. Having drawn wide again and being even fitter at his sixth run this campaign, similar tactics should be applied and Negasi will take some catching from up on the speed. I can’t see anything troubling him here.

Race 8 - 5:00PM Surdex Sheet & Coil Handicap (1000 METRES)
I’m a fan of the John McArdle-trained Blue Hope and he must be respected here, but Robbie Griffiths’ four-year-old mare CHERIEF'S CHOICE is clearly the one they all have to beat. She debuted in the Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) and finished 5.5 lengths from Limestone, but her aggressive placement shows the opinion the stable has of her. She was narrowly beaten by Sam’s Image next start and that galloper is no slouch having defeated Nature Strip twice. Cherief’s Choice then went for a spell and resumed with a maiden win, and she has subsequently placed a further five times from 10 starts. Her recent barrier trial at Cranbourne was impressive where she was doing her best work late over 800m to finish 1.3 lengths 3rd in a time of 44.62, while Blue Hope also trialled on the same day and was beaten a nose in 45.72. Cherief’s Choice appeared to do it easier in the trial and was very strong late in a trial that rated 6.5 lengths above Blue Hope’s trial. Cherief’s Choice is proven first-up, she has drawn to get the run of the race from barrier 2, and her on pace style of racing will be suited to Mornington.
