GEORGE MAIN STAKES HISTORY

The George Main Stakes a Group 1 race staged during the Sydney Spring Carnival at Randwick Racecourse in September each year.

The weight-for-age event is open to all ages, run over a distance of one mile (1600 metres) and has a prizepool in excess of $500,000.

The race's name is derived from George Main, a former chairman of the Australian Jockey Club and breeder, and it was first held in 1945 and won by Modulation. There was no race held in 2007 due to Equine Influenza.

The George Main Stakes was initially introduced as a principal race, however, was upgraded to Group 1 Status in 1979.

The George Main Stakes attracts both top tier milers and middle-distance gallopers alike making it one of the more exciting races of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

Over the race's history, a number of horses have managed to win this event on more than one occasion since 1946 including Kingston Town (1981-82), Regal Rhythm (1967-68), Count Radiant (1964-65) and Shannon (1946-47).

The George Main Stakes has been won by some other classy gallopers including Lonrho (2003), Grand Armee (2004), Road To Rock (2009), Stream (2013), Sacred Falls (2014) and Kermadec (2015).

The winner of The George Main Stakes is exempt from a ballot for the Group 1 Epsom Handicap held at the Randwick race track two weeks after this event on the final day of the carnival. Both Streama (2013) and Trusting (2010) went on to finish runner-up in the Epsom after running second in this race.

RANDWICK RACECOURSE

Originally known as the ‘Sandy Course,’ Randwick Racecourse was first used in 1833 where a private match race between two horses was held.

In 1840 the track was abandoned as a racecourse and used for training purposes before the Australian Jockey Club (AJC) moved its headquarters to Randwick and held a meeting in 1860.

The Queen Elizabeth II stand was opened to the public on August 4, 1969, and in 1992, Queen Elizabeth II visited Randwick and opened the new $30 million Paddock Grandstand.

The Australian Derby (2400m) remains one of the longest standing races to be held at Randwick after its inaugural running took place in 1861.

Royal Randwick Track Description:

Randwick is the largest racetrack in New South Wales and all races are run in a clockwise direction. It is a sweeping track with a rise from the 300m mark to the winning post in the home straight.

As well as the main track, Randwick Racecourse contains a second track known as Kensington. Due to large rainfall in the area, Kensington has been reconstructed using the Strathayr racing surface which is similar to Moonee Valley.

Strathayr is a turf cover over a base of sand, this means it is a free draining track which can take a substantial amount of rain without affecting the rating
