Sectional Stars - P.B. Lawrence Stakes Day

  • Sectional Stars from P.B. Lawrence Stakes Day
  • Four horses to follow
Osborne Bulls.

The stars made their return in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday. With plenty of runners resuming, we unpack what horses smashed the clock and who to follow in the Spring.

These four horses were Saturday’s sectional stars at Caulfield.

Race 2 - 12:55pm MacDonald Family Handicap (1100m) - LA BELLA DIOSA
Five-year-old mare LA BELLA DIOSA has always had the ability. A former winner of the Group 2 Surround Stakes, she lost her way before being transferred to the Lindsay Park operation. Her first run for the stable was sound, but a 13-week freshen up and a drop back to 1100m did the trick. She settled back in the field and tracked the favourite Rilito before letting rip inside the final furlong. Her sectionals backed up the incredible victory. She ran the fastest last 200m (11.31s), 600m (33.30s), 800m (44.12s) and 1000m (54.98s) of the entire meeting.

Race 5 - 2:40pm KS Environmental Vain Stakes (1100m) - LONG LEAF
Another Lindsay Park horse for the sectional stars, this time It’s three-year-old Colt LONG LEAF. He returned from his Autumn preparation with a powerful second behind the speedy Tony Nicconi in the Vain Stakes. Giving the rest of the field 2.5kg, he sat back before peeling wide and flying home late. He ran the quickest last 200m, 400m, 600m, 800m and 1000m of the race. I was most impressed with his late sectionals, running the 400m-200m in 10.91s (3rd fastest of meeting) and the 200m-Finish in 11.57s (6th fastest of meeting). Long Leaf is in for a big spring.

Race 7 - 4:00pm Sir John Monash P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) - KINGS WILL DREAM
I’m sure the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes will be a very good form reference moving forward. The horse that smashed the clock was the Darren Weir-trained KINGS WILL DREAM. Most punters will have him in the blackbook as his run was a real eye-catcher. He sat back and wide and proceeded to run the fastest last 200m, 400m, 600m, 800m, 1000m and 1200m of the race. He also ran some blinding sectionals late, running the last 400m-200m in 11.11s (13th fastest of meeting) and 200m-Finish in 11.72s (15th fastest of meeting). He couldn’t be going any better towards the Caulfield Cup.

Race 8 - 4:40pm Lister Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) - OSBORNE BULLS
The Godolphin horse OSBORNE BULLS scored a gritty victory Regal Roller Stakes. Despite the win not looking pretty, his run was enormous. Craig Williams was forced to make his run early and that showed in the sectionals. He ran the quickest 400m-200m split of the meeting (10.88s) and the second-fastest last 200m of the meeting (11.40s). He also ran the third-fastest last 600m of the meeting (33.71s).
