Cox Plate Runners - Runner-by-Runner guide for the Cox Plate

  • Winx has seven rivals for the 2018 Cox Plate
  • Runner-by-runner guide for the Cox Plate
Winx wins the 2017 Cox Plate.

The 2018 Cox Plate (2040m) is set to be one of the biggest and most highly anticipated races of all time, with the champion mare Winx set for a record-breaking fourth consecutive Cox Plate.

Here is our runner-by-runner guide for the Cox Plate.

1. BENBATL (3) - Saeed Bin Suroor, Oisin Murphy, 59kg
The Saeed Bin Suroor-trained five-year-old was terrific first-up in Australia, fighting off fellow Godolphin galloper Blair House in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) in what was, a stirring battle. He comfortably beat Humidor who was running home into third and Oisin Murphy should take him to lead and dictate the pace in front.
Odds: $9.00 (Sportsbet

2. HUMIDOR (7) - Darren Weir, Damian Lane, 59kg
The Darren Weir-trained Humidor has drawn barrier seven for the second consecutive year in the Cox Plate. Last year he went so close to defeating Winx, with an inch-perfect ride from Blake Shinn. This year, it’s been a messy preparation on him paper but that was the result of him overperforming and winning the Memsie Stakes second-up. Weir backed off him after that run and he was clearly not ready to win at his next two starts. By the looks of his gallop on Monday morning at Terang, Weir has him at his complete top and ready to run another great race.
Odds: $16.00 (Sportsbet

3. KINGS WILL DREAM (4) - Darren Weir, John Allen, 59kg
It’s interesting that Kings Will Dream is backing up a week after his grand final which was the Caulfield Cup. It was a complete debacle from start to finish for him. He missed the start and almost fell, which resulted in him settling further back than expected. With the slow tempo, he was given no chance of winning and still hit the line well. This is a tougher test but maps well if he steps cleanly.
Odds: $31.00 (Beteasy
4. AVILIUS (1) - James Cummings, Glyn Schofield, 59kg
The five-year-old is unbeaten in Australia, with a narrow last start victory in the Group 3 Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington. He is yet to prove himself at weight-for-age and the drop back from 2500m to 2040m on his way to a Melbourne Cup can’t be ideal. Couldn’t have him in my top four.
Odds: $26.00 (Beteasy

5. D’ARGENTO (2) - Chris Waller, Kerrin McEvoy, 57.5kg
The first of the Chris Waller duo is D’Argento. He ran on fairly into fifth behind Benbatl in the Caulfield Stakes (2000m). He galloped strongly at Breakfast With The Best on Tuesday morning. A top-four finish would be a huge result for him.
Odds: $34.00 (Sportsbet

6. WINX (6) - Chris Waller, Hugh Bowman, 57kg
The champion mare Winx is going four a record-breaking fourth consecutive Cox Plate. She won from a near impossible spot last start in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m). She ran three consecutive sub-11-second sectionals, running her last 600m in 32.21 seconds. Barrier six is interesting. I have her one-out and one-back depending on how Kings Will Dream jumps from barrier four. I can’t see Bowman being more than one or two pairs off Benbatl. She looked extraordinary on Tuesday morning. She wasn’t asked to do much and Hugh Bowman had a strong hold for her entire 1000m gallop. She looks picture perfect and is set to make history yet again.
Odds: $1.25 (Ladbrokes

7. ROSTROPOVICH (8) - Aidan O’Brien, Ryan Moore, 56kg
He ran second behind Latrobe in an Irish Derby (2414m) but that form hasn’t stacked up. He doesn’t look good enough and his odds reflect that.
Odds: $41.00 (Sportsbet

8. SAVVY COUP (5) - Michael & Matthew Pitman, Chris Johnson, 55.5kg
The New Zealander Savvy Coup rounds out the field of eight. She bolted in the Livamol Classic (2040m) over the Cox Plate distance last start at Hastings. I wouldn’t think that form is good enough but she is a stylish horse. She galloped on the course proper on Tuesday morning and I was impressed with her work. She is a flukey hope to run in the top three.
Odds: $34.00 (Sportsbet
