CF Orr Stakes Date: When is the 2018 CF Orr Stakes taking place?

  • The CF Orr Stakes is held annually at Caulfield in February
  • It is worth $500,000 in prizemoney
  • Black Caviar won the race in 2012
Suavito won in 2016

The 2018 Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) will take place at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday, February 10.

The CF Orr Stakes is held during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival. It is contested annually at Caulfield Racecourse in February.

It is run under weight for age conditions with horses aged three years old and upwards eligible to contest the seven-furlong sprint.

Carrying $500,000 in prizemoney, the Group 1 feature attracts the best horses in Australia as they gear up for their autumn campaigns aimed at bigger races; a number of sprinters, milers and even stayers contest the CF Orr Stakes.

The race was first held in 1925 and was won by The Night Patrol over one mile (1600m). It would remain over this distance until 1957 when it was contested over 1400m. A couple of variations between 1400m and 1600m would ensue up until 1973 and beyond with the race being held over 1400m since that year.

A great program of racing is held on CF Orr Stakes Day with Preludes of the Blue Diamond being contested for the fillies in a Group 2 contest and for the colts & geldings in a Group 3 event. In addition, the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m), Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m), Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m), Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) and Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) are held on the same program.

The CF Orr Stakes is memorable because it is the first Group 1 of the calendar year.

Form students should look at the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) held at Moonee Valley three weeks earlier as a guide to the CF Orr Stakes, although a number of runners have claimed the event first up.

Black Heart Bart (2017) is the most recent winner of the event having triumphed in 2017.

Gallopers wanting to contest upcoming races such as the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) or the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield two weeks later are suited by the CF Orr Stakes.

The immortal Black Caviar is the most famous winner of the CF Orr Stakes having claimed it in 2012 while champion gallopers Manikato (1979-81) and Vo Rogue (1988-90) captured the race over three consecutive years each.

Other notable winners include Heroic (1927), High Castle (1940), Flight (1946), Comic Court (1951), Rising Fast (1956), Lord (1959-60), Tobin Bronze (1967), Leilani (1975), Surround (1977), Hyperno (1978), Manikato (1979-81), Vo Rogue (1988-90), Let’s Elope (1992), Jeune (1995), Saintly (1997), Redoute’s Choice (2000), Lonhro (2004), Elvstroem (2005), El Segundo (2007), Maldivian (2009), Typhoon Tracy (2010-11), Black Caviar (2012), All Too Hard (2013), Dissident (2015) and Black Heart Bart (2017).
