Looking for the winner of the CF Orr Stakes is a tough task, but keeping some important factors on your side can help you.

Each year you can expect around half of the field to be lining up fresh from a summer spell, in particular, the stayers who are resuming from their spring campaigns of the year prior.

Some of the sprinters, however, have had the benefit of one or two runs in preparation for the 1400 metre event. The best guide to follow for these runners is the Group 2 Australia Stakes over 1200 metres which is run in late January at Moonee Valley.

It’s worth noting, four of the past six winners came from the Australia Stakes before their CF Orr Stakes victory.

Another point of interest to consider is looking at the first-up contenders. Since the year 2000, eight of the 17 winners were first-up runners, including the 2016 winner Suavito.

Five-year-olds have dominated the race in recent years winning four of the past six years. Three-year-olds have a good record as well with five wins since 2000.

Mares have proven to be well worth following, winning five of the last 11 events.

With such a short run to the first turn from the 1400 metre start at Caulfield, inside barriers are a distinct advantage and history supports this. No less than 26 of the last 30 winners have jumped from inside barrier eight.

Last year’s winner Suavito ticked all the above boxes being a five-year-old mare and jumping from gate one.

When it comes to betting in the race, the CF Orr Stakes has proven to be a paradise for favourite backers. Since 1983, 19 favourites have been successful while a further six finished in the minor placings. More recently, six of the last seven winners were sent out as favourites.

For those looking for value in the race, it’s worth noting that since 1983, only six horses have won the race at double figure odds, with just three of those since 2000.

The most successful trainer has been Peter Moody with five winners, while Michael Clarke leads the jockeys' list also with five wins followed by Luke Nolan with four.
