VRC Oaks Tips: Betting pointers to consider for the Flemington Group 1

  • What to look for to find the VRC Oaks winner
  • Key pointers to consider when backing a horse in the VRC Oaks

Looking for the winner of the VRC Oaks is a tough task, but keeping some important factors on your side can help you.

It can be just as hard to find the winner of the Oaks as it is with the colts and geldings in the Victoria Derby. However, as the race is a major test of endurance, the winner more often comes from the fittest and proven fillies with staying experience.

The major lead-up race to the VRC Oaks is the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes run on the Saturday prior as part of Derby Day. The Wakeful is run over 2000 metres and has in the past proven to be a very good guide to the Oaks.

Five fillies in the last ten years have won the Wakeful-Oaks double including, Kirramosa (2013), Brazilian Pulse (2010), Faint Perfume (2009), Serenade Rose (2005) and Hollow Bullet (2004).

The other lead-up races to consider are the Group 1 Thousand Guineas run at Caulfield and the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes run the week prior to that on Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington. These two lead-up races between them have seen 17 fillies go on to win the Oaks.

The 2015 winner Jameka took an entirely different path by taking on and beating males in the Group 1 Moonee Valley Vase before going on to win the Oaks as well.

Favourites have fared well in the last ten years with five winning the race and a further three finishing in the minor money. Longshot winners are quite rare with only four fillies winning the race in the last 30 years at double figure odds.

Barriers are of little importance, given the 2500 metre trip. From barrier rise, the run to the first turn is short, however, horses have ample time to gain a favoured position as they enter the back straight.

History shows an even spread of winners across all barriers over the past 30 years with gates two, five and seven each producing four winners.
