Turn Me Loose wins the Futurity Stakes in 2016

The 2017 Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) will be held at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday, February 25.

A weight-for-age contest that features a combination of sprinters, milers and middle distance horses, the Futurity Stakes is held during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

Carrying $500,000 in prizemoney, the race attracts a strong field of gallopers on Blue Diamond Stakes Day.

The $1.5 million Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) for the juveniles is the main race on the card but there is always plenty of interest for the Futurity Stakes and the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).

Along with the three Group 1 races, the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m), Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m), Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m), Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 Zeditave Stakes (1200m) are also run.

There is one lead-up race which should stand-out to form students and that is the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) held at Caulfield two weeks earlier.

The winner of the Futurity Stakes has come through the CF Orr Stakes in 10 of the past 17 editions; of those 10, five of them claimed the CF Orr before winning the Futurity and another two were placed.

Turn Me Loose is the most recent winner of the Futurity Stakes after capturing it in 2016. The Kiwi galloper ran fourth in the CF Orr Stakes before deriving great benefit from the run as he turned the tables on Suavito who ran third.

The Futurity Stakes was first run in 1898 when won by Resolute and has since been won by some of Australia’s most famous and talented horses, including the one and only Phar Lap.

Some of the country’s best gallopers have won the race during its illustrious history, including The Hawk (1924), Amounis (1930), Phar Lap (1931), Ajax (1938-40), Bernborough (1946), Royal Gem (1948), Lord (1959), Todman (1960), Sky High (1961), Gunsynd (1972), Manikato (1979-81 & 1983), Rubiton (1987), Vo Rogue (1988), Redelva (1991), Schillaci (1993 & 1995), Testa Rossa (2000), Reset (2004), Fields Of Omagh (2006), Typhoon Tracy (2010), More Joyous (2011) and All Too Hard (2013).
