Futurity Stakes Tips - Bowman gives big push for Alizee

  • Who will win the Caulfield Group 1?
Hugh Bowman on Alizee returns to scale after winning the Christmas Classic

I doubt Hugh Bowman has ever mentioned another horse in the same sentence as Winx – that is until he gave his thoughts on his rides for the upcoming autumn carnival.

In Bowman’s regular column for Racenet, he identified Alizee as the horse to follow this campaign.

“Looking into the future, aside from Winx, a horse I'm also really excited about going into the carnival is Alizee,” he said.
“I was obviously suspended when she won the Expressway but she came out and didn’t disappoint.
“I go to Melbourne to ride her next week in the Futurity Stakes and for me, aside from Winx, I think she really stands out at this stage.”

That’s a massive push for a lightly-raced mare that is only just starting to show her true potential.

Having won the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) as a three-year-old, the daughter of Sepoy claimed her second Group 1 win last autumn when producing a blistering turn of foot to take out the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

She bled following two trials in the spring and had to abandon that campaign, but the extended break may just be the making of the gifted four-year-old.

She carried 60.5kg to win the Christmas Classic (1200m) when first-up from a long break, and the 3rd horse home, Fell Swoop, has franked the form with a 2nd placing in a star-studded Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

With five weeks between runs, Alizee made Group 1 winners Le Romain, Hartnell and Trapeze Artist look average when easily defeating them in the Expressway Stakes (1200m).

She now comes into Saturday’s Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) with three trials and two races under her belt, and the step up to 1400m is far more suitable than 1200m for this mare.

And despite finishing 3rd to Aloisia and Shoals in her only start at Caulfield, Alizee was sixth-up and probably over the top at that stage while the other pair where peaking.

Bowman will ride a patient race at Caulfield, and I think there’s only one horse in Australia that would be able to match motors with Alizee at the moment – and she’s not lining up on Saturday.

Land Of Plenty will be finishing hard and looms as the main danger.
