George Main Stakes Runner-by-Runner Guide

  • Runner-by-Runner guide for the George Main Stakes
Avilius.

The Group One George Main Stakes (1600m) aka the Colgate Optic White Stakes will be run at Randwick on Saturday, September 21 with 11 runners making up a very competitive race.

Here is our runner-by-runner guide for the George Main Stakes.

1. HAPPY CLAPPER (4) - Patrick Webster, Glen Boss, 59kg
I was hard against Happy Clapper last start in the Winx Stakes (1400m) off what I thought was a very poor trial. He ran second behind Samadoubt but the jury is still out for me. He was in the perfect position and with the pattern of the day, he was flattered. He won a recent trial at Randwick by 2.5 lengths but was under light riding, whilst Grey Lion (a stayer) was closing late under a hold. A win wouldn’t shock me but I’m happy to take him on again at the price.
Odds: $5.00 (Sportsbet

2. AVILIUS (8) - James Cummings, Kerrin McEvoy, 59kg
The tracks in Sydney have given almost no hope in his two runs this preparation. He was given no hope first-up in the Winx Stakes but produced a really nice close, running 2.6 lengths quicker than Group One average for his final 600m. He was three-wide no cover last start in the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) on a day with a fierce wind that meant you needed to be on the rails, preferably leading. He did plenty of work into the wind, running the quickest 800m-600m split of the race and that told late. He has had excuses but assuming the track plays fair, this is D’day for him and he’s my top pick.
Odds: $3.80 (Sportsbet)

3. DREAMFORCE (1) - John Thompson, Nash Rawiller, 59kg
Dreamforce was backed as if unbeatable first-up a fortnight ago in the Tramway Stakes (1400m). He was backed from $6.50 into $3.30 with Nash on and the pattern of the day favouring leaders. He produced a figure that was 3.6 lengths better than the win of Samadoubt on the day and was quicker to the 600m and quicker over the final 600m, I’m confident he beats that horse home here.
Odds: $4.80 (Palmerbet)

4. SAMADOUBT (10) - Bjorn Baker, Tim Clark, 59kg
This six-year-old gelding was running around and getting beaten in benchmark 88 races last preparation and now he is a Group One and Group Two winner. He has been unbelievably well suited at his past two runs and shouldn’t get all the favours again with Dreamforce likely to push up on his inside. Jockey Tim Clark is flying, riding 25 winners from his past 111 rides, with a Profit on Turnover of 40.18 percent.
Odds: $7.50 (Neds

5. LIFE LESS ORDINARY (9) - Chris Waller, Jason Collett, 59kg
The eight-year-old gelding won second-up last preparation but that was in a much easier race on the Gold Coast. His work through the line first-up behind Dreamforce wasn’t too bad but not here.
Odds: $61.00 (Ladbrokes

6. MR MARATHON MAN (7) - Michael Moroney, Mark Zahra, 59kg
He was completely unsuited last start in the Feehan Stakes (1600m) at The Valley. He overraced with the slow tempo and really hit the line nicely. The $101 the corperates went up was overs and he’s the horse at massive odds I want to have a saver on.
Odds: $61.00 (Ladbrokes

7. ANGEL OF TRUTH (3) - Gwenda Markwell, Luke Currie, 58.5kg
I’m forgiving of horses sitting outside the leader first-up but he did have the pattern to suit and was really weak late. He led and picked up races in three-year-old company last preparation and looks out of his depth in Group One open age company.
Odds: $31.00 (Beteasy

8. DANZDANZDANCE (5) - Chris Gibbs & Michelle Bradley, Tommy Berry, 57kg
He did start $5 against Avilius in the Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill last preparation before running against Winx in the Queen Elizabeth. The wetter the better for him.
Odds: $15.00 (Sportsbet

9. YOUNGSTAR (2) - Chris Waller, Brenton Avdulla, 57kg
She was unsuited the way the track was playing first-up in the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) but she did hit the line nicely, running the fastest last 400m, 600m and 800m of the race off a slow tempo. She stays at 1600m here and I doubt she is brilliant enough to beat the likes of Avilius but she should be running on late.
Odds: $34.00 (Sportsbet

10. CON TE PARTIRO (11) - Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, Sam Clipperton, 57kg
The six-year-old mare was good first-up behind Deprive off the back of two good trials. It’s an interesting set-up, the blinkers come off for the first time and she is a month between runs and untried rain affected tracks, not for me.
Odds: $41.00 (Ladbrokes

11. VERRY ELLEEGANT (6) - Chris Waller, James McDonald 56.5kg
I thought her first-up effort in the Winx Stakes (1400m) was poor off two average trials. I was expecting her to be strong late but she never made any impression. I have question marks on the horse and the preparation for this race. She is a month between runs with no trial, going up from 1400m to 1600m and goes from a good track to a heavy track. I’m happy to be against her.
Odds: $6.50 (Sportsbet
