Early Melbourne Cup Tips - 2 to consider in the futures markets

The 2019 Melbourne Cup is fast approaching, and with just over three months until the great race, we are trying to find some value in the early market.

Here are my top value chances for the 2019 Melbourne Cup:

JOHANNES VERMEER ($51)

Three things: 1) We know Johannes Vermeer stays the trip because he was narrowly defeated by Rekindling who carried 3kg less in the 2017 Melbourne Cup. 2) He started $13 in the 2017 Melbourne Cup, and if he shows form early in the spring, we won’t get anywhere near the $51 that is on offer now. And 3) this does look the logical option for him seeing Team Williams gave him one run in the autumn, which they have previously used as an ‘abbreviated campaign’ for their Melbourne Cup aspirants. Johannes Vermeer was having his first run in 69 weeks when lignin up in the Blamey Stakes (1600m) and he rattled home from last to be beaten 2.2 lengths by Fifty Stars. Despite being his first run in a year and a half, Johannes Vermeer still started at $4.40 which again tells us $51 for him in a Melbourne Cup is overs at this stage. If he makes it to the great race, he’s likely to be less than 10/1.

FINCHE ($31)

Another one for Waller with former French stayer Finche who was 4th in last year’s Melbourne Cup. He could do a Fiorente who was runner-up in the Melbourne Cup for Gai Waterhouse at his first run in Australia before taking out the race the following year. Finche was 3rd in the Geelong Cup (2400m) in his Australian debut and went into the Melbourne Cup in a bit of a rush, and even Waller’s stable were saying Finche hadn’t fully acclimatised yet and he would be better the following year. If that turns out correct and he does improve with a solid Australian campaign in 2019, he’s surely one to consider.
