Local galloper The Velvet King is the $6.00 equal favourite for Saturday’s Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot.

Trained by Darren McAuliffe, four-year-old gelding The Velvet King is the early co-favourite for the Railway Stakes. Two starts ago he won the Group 3 Northerly Stakes (1400m) before finishing third, beaten 0.52 lengths by Star Exhibit in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m). The Velvet King has drawn barrier six with Chris Parnham to ride at 53kg.

Tellem We’re Comin for Grant & Alana Williams is also $6.00 with the five-year-old gelding building a nice record of eight wins from 17 starts. The gelding has won his past two at Listed level by more than 2.5 lengths on each occasion. He will begin from barrier nine with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle.

At $6.50 is the Chris Gangemi-trained four-year-old gelding Samizdat. A winner of five races from eight starts, Samizdat won the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) by 1.52 lengths over Regal Power who is an $8.00 chance.

Regal Power is another Grant & Alana Williams runner with the gelding winning the Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m) back in April. He will be ridden by WA's top jockey William Pike.

Best Of Days ($10) represents Godolphin trainer James Cummings. The six-year-old gelding was fifth in the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) last start. He was also third in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m).

It is a wide-open edition of the Railway Stakes with the outsider of the field being Platoon at $41.
