Field of 13 declared for Spring Champion Stakes

  • Gloaming Stakes generally the best lead-up form
Blake Shinn on Thinkin' Big

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Thinkin’ Big has drawn barrier 7 in Saturday’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick.

The son of High Chaparral has been installed as the $3.40 favourite for the three-year-old feature following an impressive 2.5-length victory in the traditional lead-up, the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m).

Gloaming Stakes 2nd and 3rd placegetters, Tarka and Irukandji, have also drawn favourably in gates 2 and 5 respectively.

Dulcify Quality (1600m) winner Mickey Blue Eyes has drawn wide in gate 10 following his narrow win over Gem Song who carried 6kg extra in the run.

Damien Oliver has given up the ride on Grunt in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington and heads north to partner Dealmaker for trainer Chris Waller.

Dealmaker charged home to just miss behind Tarka in the Stan Fox Stakes (1500m), and he’s been given a soft barrier trial at Randwick to keep him up to the mark.

Trainer Kris Lees has his stable flying and will be represented by the undefeated Frankel filly, Frankly Awesome, who most recently won a Class 2 event at Scone over 1600m.
