Spring Champion Stakes Tips: Betting pointers to consider for the Randwick Group 1

Looking for the winner of the Spring Champion Stakes is a tough task, but keeping some important factors on your side can help you.

The Champion Stakes has proven to be a good lead-up race for the Victoria Derby which is run a few weeks later at Flemington.

Therefore, looking at horses who come from a ‘staying’ background is usually a good start when trying to find the winner.

Rarely does a horse who hasn’t run over at least the 1600m distance or more goes on to win this illustrious event, so past performances over middle distances usually play a part in finishing up the front of the field.

The best lead-up races to focus on for the Spring Champion Stakes are the Group 2 Gloaming Stakes (2000m) run at Rosehill and the Listed Dulcify Quality (1800m) run at Randwick prior to the Spring Champion Stakes. Both races have produced Spring Champion Stakes winners.

Five of the past six Spring Champion Stakes winners came from the Gloaming Stakes in which three on them won it, while the other two finished runner-up.

Tie the Knot finished second to Sunline in the Cox Plate

From the Dulcify Quality, we have to go back to the 1990s to find a winner who went on to victory the Spring Champion Stakes. Danewin (1994), Nothin’ Like A Dane (1995) and Tie The Knot (1997) all completed the double.

From the 2000m start at Randwick, barriers aren’t so important unless the race attracts an unusually big field. When they jump, they have a nice run of over 400 metres to the first turn which ample opportunity to have your mount in a prominent position.

The race has proven to be a nightmare for favourites with only two greeting the judge since 2002 and just one being successful in the last 10 years - that coming in 2015 with Vanbrugh. However, seven favourites in the last 10 years have finished in the placings.
