Group 1 action continues at Randwick on Saturday October 12 with the running of the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) for the three-year-olds.

The Randwick feature has been won by some quality gallopers over the years, including It's A Dundeel (2012), Savabeel (2004), Tie The Knot (1997) and Nothin Leica Dane (1995).

This year, the likes of Shadow Hero, Castlevecchio, Quick Thinker and Just Thinkin' will be out to join that elite group.

Those four dominate the early betting for the mile and a quarter race with Shadow Hero the standout at the $1.60 quote ahead of Castlevecchio at $4.50 and Quick Thinker at $6. Just Thinkin is at $8.50.

Three of those four come out of the recent Gloaming Stakes (1800m). Castlevecchio ran 7th in the Golden Rose. The Gloaming has always been the ideal lead up to the Spring Champion and has provided six of the past nine winners.

Shadow Hero careered away to a dominant three length win in that race this year from Subedar and Quick Thinker. Just Thinkin' ran 4th, while a number of other contenders were further down the track.

It is hard to see any of Shadow Hero's rivals turning things around and making up the required three lengths. The son of Pierro has had just the five career starts and his winter campaign culminated with an eye-catching 4th at Group 1 level in the J.J.Atkins Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm before he reappeared in the Dulcify Quality (1500m) on 14 September at Rosehill.

In that race, he settled at the tail of the field and rocketed home late in the piece to finish on the heels of Just Thinkin' and Subedar.

The step up to the 1800m was right up his alley as he turned the tables on those contenders in the Gloaming, settling a fraction closer to the speed before unleashing a devastating sprint in the last 400m of the race.

He should take further improvement out of that run. The danger might be Castlevecchio but the step up from the 1400m to the 2000m is a bit of a concern for me. Other rivals come out of much weaker races and I am willing to take the skinny odds on offer as he looks the real deal.

Mark Newnham trained the winner of this race last year and can go back to back, while Shadow Hero's jockey, Josh Parr, should enjoy a beautiful time of it from barrier 2 aboard the hotpot and can add to his win in this race aboard Monaco Consul in 2014.
