The Goodwood Runners - Runner-by-Runner guide for The Goodwood

Runner-by-Runner guide for The Goodwood (1200m)
Cool Passion

A 15-horse field will contest Saturday’s Group One The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville. Here is our runner-by-runner guide.

1. BOOKER (15) - Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra, Dwayne Dunn, 56.5kg
She got the perfect run first-up winning a very high-rating Oakleigh Plate (1100m) against Encryption and Eduardo. She ran an ok ninth in the Newmarket Handicap but she didn’t pull up great after that run. She has had 67 days between runs, which is a positive as she is a better horse fresh. She has had two Flemington jumpouts, the last one was good as beat stablemate Smart Coupe under light riding. She will be back from barrier 15 with D.Dunn on.
Odds: $9.50 (Beteasy)

2. SPRIGHT (16) - Garry Frazer, Damien Oliver, 56.5kg
She finally got her set-up to win last start and powered over the top of her rivals to win the Group One Robert Sangster (1200m) defeating Cool Passion. She ran her last 600m 12.5 lengths above benchmark for a final figure of eight-lengths above benchmark. From barrier 16, she maps to get a similar run to last start and there looks to be enough speed in the race for her to run on. She is a deserved favourite and my top pick.
Odds: $3.90 (Sportsbet)

3. DESPATCH (4) - Tony McEvoy, Todd Pannell, 56kg
He has won his last two, including the Listed Oakbank Stakes (1100m) and the Group Three D C McKay Stakes (1100m) defeating Zalmona on both occasions. His last start figure of 3.4 lengths above benchmark isn’t good enough to win this and T.Pannell on suggests he is T.McEvoy’s third stringer.
Odds: $16.00 (Sportsbet)

4. HARD EMPIRE (3) - Richard Jolly & Chantelle Jolly, Jake Toeroek, 56kg
He split Dollar For Dollar and Inn Keeper in a Group Three race here at Morphettville last preparation. He bolted in first-up Steel Frost, running 4.4 lengths below benchmark to the 600m and 9.8 lengths above benchmark for the final 600m to record an overall figure of 5.4 lengths above benchmark. He was poor last start against Despatch and I couldn’t be with.
Odds: $51.00 (Ladbrokes

5. CASINO WIZARD (6) - Lee Creek, Jason Holder, 55.5kg
He hasn’t won since defeating Petrelle and All About Nicci at Morphettville in October last year. He has been average so far this preparation and I couldn’t find him.
Odds: $67.00 (Bet365

6. STEEL FROST (8) - Will Clarken, Jamie Kah, 55.5kg
He had excuses but was still good to the line against I Am Someone in the Wangoom last start when beaten 2.4 lengths into fifth. He should improve again third-up and was only beaten 2.3 lengths by Santa Ana Lane in this race last year and was 1.3 lengths off Widgee Turf in the same preparation. He probably not going as well this year but gets a good map and J.Kah sticks.
Odds: $34.00 (Ladbrokes)

7. VALOUR ROAD (9) - Simon A Miller, Luke Currie, 55.5kg
He got the perfect run but still got the job done in a very strong Group Two Euclase Stakes (1200m) last start defeating Tofane. He went 5.7 lengths below benchmark to the 600m and came home 8.6 lengths above benchmark for an overall figure of 2.9 lengths above. He was only 2.8 lengths off Voodoo Lad in the G1 Winterbottom last year. He won’t get the same easy lead as last start and I couldn’t take him at the price.
Odds: $9.50 (Beteasy)

8. COOL PASSION (2) - Tony McEvoy, Barend Vorster, 54.5kg
She was on a tempo that looked fast but was only 2.9 lengths above benchmark to the 600m last start in the G1 Robert Sangster (1200m). She looked the winner at the 150m but was just run down by Spright who unleashed a terrific turn of foot. She maps for an easy time of things just behind the leaders, she will need the gaps in the straight but can win. All things being equal, Spright probably has her measure.
Odds: $6.50 (Ladbrokes

9. MALIBU STYLE (10) - Neville Parnham, TBA, 54.5kg
He ran a really nice second behind I Am Someone in the Wangoom last start off the back of a flashy seventh at Caulfield, running the 10th-fastest 600m-400m, 12th-fastest 400m-200m and second-fastest last 200m of the race. He beat Bons Away third-up last preparation before running 4.5L behind Voodoo Lad in the Group One Winterbottom Handicap. He still looks on the way up this prep.
Odds: $26.00 (Neds)

10. ICONOCLASM (12) - Danny O’Brien, Craig Williams, 54.5kg
He was very tough first-up and kept kicking to defeat Miss Vixen at Caulfield. He sat three-wide with no cover and was under the whip at the 300m and was headed by Miss Vixen at the 100m but stuck his neck out and won. He has a figure of 15.7 lengths above benchmark last preparation in the Group One Kennedy Mile and flogged a genuine G1 horse in Widgee Turf at The Valley. Can win.
Odds: $7.50 (Beteasy)

11. I AM SOMEONE (7) - Paul Preusker, Dean Holland, 54.5kg
He ran 14.4 lengths above benchmark when running second behind Miss Leonidas two starts ago at Caulfield and then won the Wangoom Handicap (1200m) last start at The Bool, running 5.9 lengths above benchmark. He ran the third-fastest 600m-400m split of the race, the fastest 400m-200m split and seventh-fastest last 200m. I thought he got the perfect run to win last start and a Group One level 1200m race might just be a bridge too far, although I’ll never completely rule out a Paul Preusker-trained horse.
Odds: $14.00 (Sportsbet)

12. INN KEEPER (5) - Symon Wilde, Damien Thornton, 54.5kg
I thought his first-up performance was very good behind Bandipur who was won since. He ran 4.5 lengths above benchmark to the 600m and 6.4 lengths above benchmark for the final 600m for an overall figure of 10.9 lengths above benchmark. He wasn’t given too much hope last start in the Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an improved performance. He was placed behind the likes of Voodoo Lad and Dollar For Dollar last preparation. Damien Thornton from barrier five is my slight query.
Odds: $21.00 (Beteasy)

13. ZALMONA (14) - Peter Blanch, Paul Gatt, 54.5kg
He has run second behind Despatch in his last two starts, who I’m not giving a huge hope to here. P.Gatt on from barrier 14 can’t help either.
Odds: $67.00 (Bet365)

14. JAMAICAN RAIN (11) - Richard Laming, Tegan Harrison, 54kg
She surprised me first-up on a good track at Caulfield and bolted in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) defeating Naantali and Spanish Reef who have both been competitive at Group One level since. She was too bad to be true last start in the Group One Coolmore Classic (1500m) and did pull up lame. 60 days between runs and back from 1500m to 1200m is very interesting. She has trialled well but gets T.Harrison from 11 in a Group One. Unders for mine.
Odds: $10.00 (Sportsbet)

15. GYTRASH (13) - Gordon Richards, Dom Tourneur, 53kg
He was placed against the likes of Written By, Golden Halo and Schillidora last preparation. He won his first two starts this preparation impressively including a nice win against the talented Illumicon. I thought his third in the Euclase Stakes behind Valour Road and Tofane was very good. The issue is the map from barrier 13 with Dom Tourneur. He is likely going to be too far back of three-wide from barrier 13.
Odds: $26.00 (Bet365)

16. BEHEMOTH (1) - David Jolly, Anthony Darmanin, 53kg
The All Too Hard gelding announced himself as a very good horse when he bolted in against Social Spin at The Valley last preparation. His trial prior to his first-up run at Morphettville was very good and he just missed behind Humma Humma over 1100m. He was again very good in a trial behind Cool Passion and that form can obviously be lined-up with Spright and others. Things were against him last start in the Euclase Stakes but I thought he was still only fair. He is a big horse with a big stride and barrier one looks horrible for him and C.Williams to A.Darmanin is a negative jockey change.
Odds: $26.00 (Bet365
