The Group 1 2YO Pearl Classic Final (2130m) is the highlight at Gloucester Park on Friday night.

A field of 10 colts and geldings will face the starter in the $100,000 feature which will be Race 5 on the 10-race card.

Here are the leading contenders in the Pearl Classic.

2. ARISTOCRATIC STAR

A winner of two from six starts for trainer Justin Prentice, the colt will be driven by Gary Hall Jnr and appears to have strong claims in the race. Both wins came at Northam prior to a spell; he has finished third at both runs this campaign.

Two starts ago Aristocratic Star was beaten 19.7m after the leader Power And Grace dropped a 27.6 third quarter. Aristocratic Star was unable to sustain his run leading the one-wide line and was entitled to peak on the run. He was then third behind Jaxon Jones and Valentines Brook who both line up here. All three hit the line well and with the barrier draw advantage, Aristocratic Star is the horse to beat.

I believe he can show the necessary gate speed to lead and that’s why I have Aristocratic Star an odds-on chance in the race.

4. JAXON JONES

Three wins from five starts for the Dennis Roche-trained Jaxon Jones. Three starts ago he beat a strong field by leading throughout. It was a sprint home in 28.9 and 27.5 seconds at Bunbury for a 1:57.7 mile rate.

He was a heat winner last start when defeating Valentines Brook and Aristocratic Star in 2:00.2. I am not sure he can find the lead here and doesn’t represent any value in the race.

7. VALENTINES BROOK

Mike Reed and Mark Reed combine with Valentines Brook, a gelding that has won two from six starts. He was second in his heat and has each-way claims in the race.

He defeated an inferior field at Northam when winning by 13.7m in 1:59.4 for the 1780m. He could be the breeze horse in the race and will have to be good to sit outside Aristocratic Star if that is the case.

10. MANNING

A dominant heat winner when trailing the leader and racing away to win by 22.5m for trainer Justin Prentice and driver Chris Lewis. I have his stablemate on top but Manning is the horse that won’t have to do any work in the race and can make them pay if there is pressure in the race.

Manning has won two from five starts; he was last of six behind Jaxon Jones three starts ago at Bunbury. Expect him to run well as he should get off the pegs at the start.

Prediction

Aristocratic Star has the best barrier of the main chances and should be able to lead throughout to capture Group 1 glory.
