Beauty Generation scares off Stewards’ Cup challengers

Hong Kong's champion miler - Beauty Generation

Beauty Generation’s presence in the Group One Stewards’ Cup appears to have warned off ‘would-be’ challengers for the $10,000,000 (HK) event.

The 1600m race, to be held at Sha Tin on Sunday week, has attracted just seven entries which will see the smallest field line up in the last 10 years.

Rated the number one horse in the world on turf (over 1600m), the Road To Rock gelding has 12 career victories to his name, with eight of those over the mile.

He is unbeaten in his current preparation and because of the form he has shown over the past two seasons, rival trainers are now heading overseas with their horses to avoid clashing with the Hong Kong champion.

As Hong Kong Racing reports, leading trainer Caspar Frownes is now considering a move to Dubai with his Group One winning six-year-old Southern Legend, just to avoid clashing with Beauty Generation.

At his past three starts, Southern Legend has finished behind Beauty Generation, including the Group Two J.C Mile (2nd) and the Group One Hong Kong Mile (3rd).

Due to the restricted opportunities in Hong Kong, it is envisaged that other trainers could follow suit and look for suitable races overseas, to avoid clashing with Beauty Generation.

In Australia, Black Caviar and more recently Winx experienced similar situations however trainers had more options and opportunities there whereas in Hong Kong the events are more limited.

The Stewards’ Cup however, wasn’t one of Beauty Generation’s fondest memories where he finished unplaced behind Seasons Bloom last year and this year there may be another ‘fly in the ointment’ for him to be wary of with the John Size-trained Conte shaping up as a genuine challenger.

One thing that can be said about Conte is that he’s no stranger to barrier trials.

The Starcraft gelding has taken part in no less than 21 trials to date, winning nine of them.

The lightly-raced five-year-old has won six of his eight starts, filling the minor money at his other two runs.

In his past two starts, he has gone from winning a class 2 event (1400m) to taking out the Group Three Chinese Club Challenge Cup (1400m) where he beat home Morethanlucky and Rattan.

Whilst these results are impressive, jumping from Group Three 1400m to Group One 1600m against the best in town may be another matter, only time will tell.

Southern Legend and Beauty Only head the rest of the contenders but both of them finished three lengths behind Beauty Generation at their past two meetings and look tested yet again.
