Jockey - Blake Shinn

Jockey Blake Shinn’s final Australian meeting before heading to Hong Kong ended on a sour note after earning a suspension for careless riding at Randwick on Saturday.

Shinn was charged over his ride on the Chris Waller-trained Velocita in the Benchmark 78 TAB Handicap.

Stewards stated that Shinn caused interference to Winona Costin on Bye See passing the 200-metre mark as he allowed his mount to move closer to the inside rail. Costin was forced to stop riding momentarily and steady Bye See.

He was initially slapped with a seven-meeting ban however stewards reduced that to five meetings after Shinn pleaded guilty to the charge.

Shinn is due to leave for Hong Kong soon, in time for the opening of the new racing season in September.

His suspension can be served before he heads overseas.

Meanwhile, suspensions didn’t stop there as two Melbourne jockeys felt the wrath of racing stewards.

Apprentices, Fred Kersley and Chelsea Hall finished first and second (respectively) in the Rising Stars Final (1400m) but had their moment of glory soured as stewards charged both of them with careless riding.

Kersley was charged for cramping race leader Fragonard rounding the home turn and stewards suspended him for 11 meetings.

Hall was charged for excessive whip use, striking her mount 11 times before the 100-metre mark which cost her a six-meeting ban.

On a brighter note, ill-stricken jockey Tahlia Hope is making steady improvement on the viral meningitis that had her hospitalised on July 11.

Victorian Jockeys' Association chief executive Matt Hyland said on Saturday that the 20-year-old rider was showing signs of improvement.

"She's still in Frankston Hospital and pending further scans and tests may transfer hospitals," Hyland said.
