A bizarre turn of events unfolded in Cairns after the running of race five at the Cannon Park track where first past the post, Lord Archer, was disqualified after the jockey weighed in light.

Sent out a $3.60 chance in the race, the Roy Chillemi-trained gelding crossed the line a head in front of Flying Fero and Mick’s Dream but had the race taken away when rider Wanderson D’Avila weighed in more than the permitted half kilo lighter than his allocated weight of 59kgs.

During the Steward’s inquiry, it was determined that the lead bag had not been placed on the horse before the start of the event. 

Trainer, Roy Chillemi pleaded guilty under AR 209 (1) (2) (a) (b) " claiming he had accidentally left the bag off the horse when saddling him.

Chillemi was fined $1,000 for the offence.

Lord Archer was officially disqualified and Flying Fero announced the winner of the race.
