As has become custom, potential Melbourne Cup raiders step out in Wednesday’s Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) at Geelong Racecourse.

Last year’s Melbourne Cup 3rd placegetter, Prince Of Arran, has drawn the outside gate as Newmarket-based trainer Charlie Fellowes aims to give his seven-year-old gelding a bigger gap between runs this time around.

He was runner-up to The Chosen One in the Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield, and The Chosen One was far from disgraced finishing 3.9 lengths from Mer De Glace in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) last Saturday.

Other internationals to step out include Saeed Bin Suroor’s Red Galileo who was runner-up to Mustajeer in the Ebor Handicap (2787m), the John Hammond-prepared Haky who was beaten a dozen lengths in the Herbert Power, as well as the William Mullins-trained True Self who was 6th in the Ebor Handicap.

Local Cup hope Steel Prince has recovered from a barrier mishap and aims to get his Cup campaign back on track with Damien Oliver taking the ride from barrier 8.
