The Golden Eagle set for a 2019 introduction

A new event for four-year-olds

Racing NSW announced on Wednesday in a special press conference that a new event, to be called The Golden Eagle will be run during Sydney’s Spring Carnival from 2019.

The race is to be run at Rosehill on Saturday November 2 over 1500m at set weights and is restricted to four-year-olds with a first prize purse of $4.1 million.

In addition to this, Racing NSW recognised charities will also benefit from the race as 10% of all prizemoney will be donated to organisations nominated by the prize-winning connections.

The purpose of restricting the race to four-year-olds, is an attempt to retain the top-class three-year-olds from being retired to stud and the prize pool is a way of encouraging connections to keep their horses in work long enough to consider shooting for a share of the $7.5 million pool.

Prizemoney for the race will be funded entirely from new revenues, rather than drawing on existing revenues of the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Industry, with the new revenue source to be announced at a later date.

As an added incentive, The Golden Eagle will also be known as the third leg of the ‘Golden Slam’ which carries a $5 million bonus for any horse who can win the Golden Slipper as a two-year-old, the Golden Rose as a three-year-old and then go on and win the Golden Eagle as a four-year-old.

There will be two other new races added to the Spring Carnival, both of which will be worth $1 million each.

The $1 million Bondi Stakes will be run at Randwick on Saturday October 26 over 1600m and will be restricted to three-year-olds.

The Golden Gift which was first run in 2015 as an 1100m event for two-year-olds will now be run on 9 November 2019 and carry a $1 million purse.
