Amercement wins the Widden Stakes

The James Cummings-trained Amercement has come into Golden Slipper calculations after an eye-catching win in Saturday’s Group Three Widden Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.

The Lonhro filly’s last to first effort saw bookmakers reaching for the pencils as they quickly reduced her Golden Slipper odds from $51 to $26 with Sportsbet.

The Godolphin two-year-old couldn’t take advantage of the gate one draw and she settled last in the 10-horse field. In the run home, she couldn’t find clean air which forced Brenton Avdulla to switch back to the inside where he found a convenient split between Blazing Miss and Giselle Anne and proved too strong in the end.

She opened up at $9 on Wednesday with early markets which punters quickly jumped on and by Thursday she was into $5.50.

She was sent to the barriers a $5 second favourite.

The fast finishing Rotator, who also came from back in the field, didn’t escape the bookies’ attention either with her Slipper quote slashed from $101 to $26.

Meanwhile, in the race prior to the Widden Stakes, the Team Snowden- trained McLaren also stamped himself as a genuine contender for the Golden Slipper with a victory in the Group Three Canonbury Stakes (1100m) for the colts and geldings.

The Exceed And Excel colt came in for plenty of support from punters as he price tumbled from $1.80 in early markets to his starting price of $1.55.

As a result of that victory, betting agencies reacted and his earlier quote of $15 has now been dropped to $9 with Beteasy.

While McLaren won well, he had plenty of ground shaved off him by the fast finishing Spring Loaded who looks to be screaming for the 1200m Slipper distance.

Bookies also acted quickly on his performance and slashed his early quote from $101 down to $26.

The Golden Slipper will be run at Rosehill on March 23.
