A recent press release revealed that Hong Kong Derby fancy Waikuku had an issue leading up to Sunday’s big race.

Trainer John Moore told the media that the horse appeared to have a sore foot on Sunday morning but he was back running by the afternoon.

Moore didn’t appear to be overly concerned on the matter.

“He continues to make progress and I think he’ll be right for the race” Moore said.

He galloped freely in trackwork on Thursday morning clearing the air over any issues with his foot and now leaves Moore with just the barrier draw to ponder over.

The four-year-old comes into the HK$18 million race winning his past four starts however after drawing gate 14 has eased slightly from his opening quote of $3 to now be a firm second elect at $3.30 with Sportsbet.

Moore was fairly optimistic when asked for his thoughts on the draw.

“It could be worse, it could be better, it just depends on the set-up of the race and how they run the race” he said.

Moore pointed out that the horse is very versatile as he did jump from the outside gate last start in the Hong Kong Classic and still managed to win.

After coming up with barrier eight, the Frankie Lor-trained Dark Dream now heads the market as race favourite.

Zac Purton will be in the saddle after managing two minor placings previously and he will be all out to make it third time lucky with the gelding.

Opening at $3.50, the son of All American is now the punter’s elect at $3.
