Can Size measure up to the trainer’s title challenge ?

Steve Bennett in News 9 Jul 2019
  • Just one win separates the two trainers
  • 20 races to go

The battle is on in earnest for the Hong Kong trainer’s title as John Size holds a slender lead with just 20 races left in the season.

Hot on his heels is seven-time premiership winner John Moore who has been slowly but surely whittling the gap down to where the scene is now set for a nail-biting finish as the score currently sits at 74-73.

Size has ten premiership titles to his name and will field six runners at Wednesday night’s Happy Valley meeting, while Moore will saddle-up five of his own.

While Moore trails in the battle, he remains confident he can secure his eighth title.

“I’m really confident. I’m there with all guns firing,” he said

The first of Moore’s seven titles was snared in the 1985/86 season. He completed a hat-trick in the early 1990s, which included a tie with David Hill for the 1992/93 championship.

“I’ve got five runners on Wednesday night and all of them can win, as far as I’m concerned” he said.
“They’ve all performed admirably in their previous starts.”

Size has put his hopes of victory in the hands of one man on Wednesday night with
Joao (Magic Man) Moreira riding all six of his runners.

Size is approaching the challenge with an open mind.

"It depends who has the luck to win the races; I don’t think you can define it any other way,” he said.
“I think I’ve done the same thing day in, day out since the first day I arrived here.
“If I win enough races I win the championship.
“Sometimes other trainers do much better than me and I’ve just got to cop it.”

Size saddles-up True Grit in the Class 3 Sweet Orange Hcp with the four-year-old unbeaten this time in having won four straight.

In the same race, Moore has Zac Purton aboard Tashidelek who in on the improve coming off a close-up second last start at the Happy Valley circuit.

Whatever happens on Wednesday night, the battle for the trainer’s premiership will continue at Sha Tin on Sunday where the 11-race program brings the season to an end.
