Hugh Bowman - Will miss the ride on Werther

Leading rider Hugh Bowman will miss the International Jockey’s Championship in Hong Kong after being suspended for 35 meetings after his ride on Marmelo in the Melbourne Cup.

Bowman rode a fantastic race to steer last year’s cup favourite home into second place but the effort came at a big price.

The star jockey was slapped with no less than three separate charges for his Melbourne Cup ride and saw him finish the day with a 35-meeting suspension after being found guilty of all three offences.

The first charge was for careless riding where he caused interference at the 500m mark.

Charger number two was imposed for excessive whip use prior to the final 100 metres.

Then came the body blow, charge three for returning to scale and weighing-in heavy, where he weighed-in more than half a kilo over the set weight of 55kgs he was allotted for the race.

Bowman pleaded guilty to all charges and offered no excuses with stewards showing no mercy in handing down the suspensions.

Bowman was banned for 12 meetings on the careless riding charge, eight meetings for the excessive whip charge and a whopping 21 meetings for weighing-in heavy.

While the grand total here reads 41 meetings, stewards exercised their discretionary powers and sealed the suspension at 35 meetings.

Hong Kong Racing reports that due to the length of the suspension, Bowman will miss the Japan Cup meeting and the chance to defend his title which he won aboard Cheval Grand in the 2400m Group One event in 2017.

Bowman will also miss the ride on multiple Group One winner Werther in the Group Two Jockey Club Cup (2000m) on November 18.

The good news for Bowman is that his suspension ends on December 8 which will allow him to ride during the Longines Hong Kong International Race Series which kicks-off on December 9 at the Sha Tin track.
