Long Leaf

Long Leaf will head to New Zealand and take on the Karaka Million 3YO Classic at Ellerslie to be run on Australia Day.

The Lindsay Park colt finished second behind Social Spin last Saturday over 1400m at Caulfield which was a lead-up race to his New Zealand campaign.

AAP reports that plans are in place for the horse to leave for New Zealand in the week of the race being run.

"At the moment we've got a flight leaving either on the Tuesday or the Wednesday, and James McDonald is going to ride him." Co-trainer Tom Dabernig said.

During last spring, Long Leaf ran third in the Sandown Guineas (1600m) behind Ringerdingding and Seabrook.

The Karaka Million Classic is over the Guineas distance of 1600m and the stable are confident he will perform well at Ellerslie.

"He ran well in the Sandown Guineas and I thought he ran really well at Flemington last start," Dabernig said.
"We had him wound up but it was a bit of time between runs and going to the mile in New Zealand we thought we would use the race as a good hit-out."

A trip to New Zealand was on the cards for the Fastnet Rock colt last year however the stable then decided to remain in Australia and target the Blue Diamond instead.

Long Leaf won the Blue Diamond preview before finishing down the track in the Group One Blue Diamond Stakes three weeks later.
