Patrick Erin to miss the Lexus and Cup

Trainer Chris Waller has announced the withdrawal of Patrick Erin from Saturday’s Group Three Lexus Stakes.

Winner of the Group One Metropolitan Hcp has succumbed to an elevated temperature and given Waller no choice but to scratch him from Saturday’s 2500m event.

This means he will now miss the Melbourne Cup, having to win the Lexus Stakes in order to qualify for Tuesday’s big race.

AAP reports, the Gallant Guru gelding was set to run in last Wednesday’s Bendigo Cup only to miss that race with a similar condition.

With Patrick Erin out of contention, this leaves Chris Waller with Brimham Rocks his lone runner in the Lexus who also needs to win the event to gain a Cup start.

Brimham Rocks has been somewhat of a bridesmaid of late, finishing second at his past three starts.

The Fastnet Rock gelding finished second in the Group Three Kingston Town Stakes before he was runner-up behind his stablemate in The Metropolitan and then second again behind Cup favourite Yucatan in the Herbert Power Hcp.

Waller has three runners already qualified for a Cup start with Youngstar, Finche and the veteran Who Shot Thebarman lining up for his fourth appearance as a 10-year-old.
