Queensland targets for impressive Valley winner

  • Behemoth has untapped potential
  • The Brisbane Winter Carnival is on the radar for him
Craig Williams rides Behemoth to an easy victory at Moonee Valley.

The David Jolly-trained Behemoth has always shown the stable he has plenty of ability, but the three-year-old All Too Hard gelding went to a new level on Saturday, winning the opening race at Moonee Valley in dominant fashion.

The son of All Too Hard was brought as a weanling for $120,000 but was sold as a yearling for just $6,000, with trainer David Jolly telling Michael Felgate on RSN 927’s Racing Pulse, he turned into “An ugly duckling”.

He is no ugly duckling on the racecourse, winning his last two starts despite still learning what racing is all about. He produced an exceptional effort on Saturday, rounding up his rivals and putting them away with ease. He ran straight passed the Stakes performed Smart Elissim, with jockey Craig Williams sitting up and posing for the photo.

The clock backed up what was seen visually. Behemoth ran the quickest last 200m (11.23s), 400m (22.27s), 600m (33.49s) and 800m (44.78s) of the race, including running the quickest 400m-200m sectional of the meeting (11.04s).

“We were quietly confident he’d run well/win but obviously we didn’t think he’d win with such authority.” Jolly said on RSN’s Racing Pulse.

When discussing a possible Autumn campaign for the horse, Jolly all but ruled out a Melbourne trip, with the longevity of the horse in mind.

“The plan is to get him to the Autumn. I’d like to think we’d run through a light Adelaide campaign and possibly finish it off in Queensland and maybe spell him up there.
“I think that would suit the horse, where he gets to have a bit more time in the spelling paddock, rather than bring him back and rush him to a Melbourne Autumn. I don’t think that would be ideal for where he is at the moment.”
