Racing Queensland’s ‘1 For The Bush’ campaign proved a great success over the weekend with more than $50,000 raised for the drought relief effort.

The campaign was conducted over last weekend involving all three codes of racing, namely, gallops, trots and greyhounds.

Racing Queensland (RQ) made a pledge that it would donate $1,000 for every number one saddlecloth that won a race over the entire weekend (both Saturday and Sunday).

The nation’s largest betting agencies (Tabcorp, Ladbrokes, Sportsbet and BetEasy) also came onboard, agreeing to match RQ’s donation to the dollar, guaranteeing the fundraising campaign $5,000 for every number one winner across the state.

Racing across the state over the weekend produced 10 winners carrying the number 1 saddlecloth (or rug), with eight gallopers, one trotter and one greyhound being successful.

Winners were spread across Australia’s second largest state with success happening as far north as Innisfail, south to the Gold Coast and west to Goondiwindi.

Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe was full of praise for the success coming from the fundraising exercise.

“The 1 for the Bush fundraising campaign has been nothing short of a great success,” he said.
“The funds raised will make a tangible difference to the many communities presently being impacted by the drought.
“Racing plays an important role across Queensland’s communities and I applaud the industry for its willingness to raise funds for such an important initiative.”

In addition to these funds, RQ awarded $10,000 to the top-three place getters from the TAB Country Cups Challenge Final at Doomben on Saturday – Deadly Choices ($5000), San Vincenzo ($3000) and French Hussler ($2000) for them to donate to a rural charity of their choice.

Further support also came from a number of racing clubs with the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club donating $1000 from Saturday night’s Albion Park meeting, while the Kilcoy Race Club and Kilcoy Diggers provided $800 apiece through their on-course fundraising efforts.

RQ Chairman Steve Wilson also voiced his appreciation of the effort.

“The industry’s response to 1 for the Bush was particularly heartening,” he said.

“Thanks to their collective support, $52,600 will now be donated to the QCWA (Queensland Country Women’s Association), who will ensure that a great deal of good will be delivered to some of our most vulnerable Queenslanders.
“Our thoughts remain with those facing adversity and we express our hope that rainfalls will soon bring an end to the terrible conditions many are enduring.”
