The Group 1 action continued in Perth on Saturday December 1 for the Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot, while on the eastern seaboard, the action was at Rosehill, Moonee Valley and Doomben.

Here is our round up of the day.

Voodoo Lad takes out the Winterbottom Stakes

After a series of near misses at the highest level,  Voodoo Lad (1200m) broke through to claim his first ever Group 1 by taking out the $1 million Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).

The Darren Weir-trained galloper settled last in the field of 14 but with a very solid tempo in front, the Victorian was able to launch his customary flying finish, providing an emotional Damien Oliver with a Group 1 win in his home state.

Enticing Star, who also settled towards the rear, finished runner-up with Willy Pike on board, while Malaguerra finished 3rd. The race favourite, Viddora, could only manage 11th

Rosehill

The feature of the day at Rosehill was the Festival Stakes (1500m) and it was a win for My Nordic Hero, who flashed down the outside to defeat Goodfella and Chamois Road.

The grey galloper, who was ridden by Hugh Bowman, settled back in the field and benefitted by the early speed that was set in the race. The win was his second since coming over to Australia from Ireland in 2016 and he will now head to the Villiers Stakes (1600m).

In the Starlight Stakes (1100m) for the sprinters Invincible Star defied all the challengers to claim victory in the Listed affair, while Mapmaker took out the Summer Racing Handicap (1300m).

Moonee Valley

It was a day for favourite backers at the tight turning Melbourne circuit with Fill The Flute, Our Luca and Al Galayel all landing at short prices, while Exceltara added some value to the quaddie by saluting as an $11 chance in the Woodside Park Stud Handicap (1200m).

One of the big winners of the day at the Valley was Brooklyn Hustle, who rattled home from last in Race 2 for the two-year-olds. He is one to put into the black book.

Doomben

Tony Gollan enjoyed a day out by training four winners, including Outback Barbie in the Mode Stakes (1200m) as well as I'm A Rippa in the George Moore Stakes (1200m).

Looking Ahead

The Group 1 action returns to Perth on Saturday December 8 for the running of the Kingston Town Stakes (1800m), while in Victoria, racing heads to Pakenham for the Pakenham Cup (2500m).
