Runaway to miss the Lexus Stakes

Geelong Cup winner - Runaway

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Runaway has been scratched from Saturday’s Lexus Stakes.

The four-year-old Geelong Cup winner has been given a saloon passage into the $7.3 million Melbourne Cup after the withdrawal of Patrick Erin elevated the Manhattan Rain bay horse up to 21st in the Cup order of entry.

This guarantees him a Cup start which led Waterhouse and Bott to making the quick decision to pulling him out of the 2500m Lexus Stakes, which he no longer needs to win.

An eye-catching fourth in the Cranbourne Cup led to him running in the Geelong Cup where he led all the way to win, beating home stablemate Northwest Passage and the Chris Waller-trained Finche.

Now a certain Cup starter, Runaway has the luxury of the weekend off but will be ready for battle on Tuesday along with his ever-excited rider, Stephen Baster.

Commonly known as the ‘Smiling Assassin’, Baster was all smiles when returning to scale after that Geelong Cup win and was (at the time) exited over the thought of the horse gaining a start in the cup.

It was then thought he would have to attract a big weight penalty for winning the Geelong Cup in order to gain a Melbourne Cup start, however, as things have turned out, he will be there on Tuesday just the same.

Runaway and Baster could very well be joined by stablemate Thinkin’ Big should he win the Victoria Derby.

Waterhouse is keen to run the three-year-old provided he wins the Derby comfortably and he pulls up in good health.
