Extra Brut returns to scale after winning the Victoria Derby

Racing was at Flemington Saturday November 3 for Derby Day and there were plenty of big names in action with four big Group 1 races that were decided on the day.

We have reviewed the runs of all the major players at the venue from the day and rated them in our 'report card'.

Race 5 - Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200 METRES)

1st- Sunlight- 10/10. Brilliant performance to bounce back from her unlucky Manikato Stakes (1200m) performance. She stalked Written By and had too much in the tank in the concluding stages. Became the first filly to take out the 'stallion making race' since Nechita in 2012.
2nd- Zousain- 9/10. Finished runner up in another big Group 1 but looks to have a big future.
3rd- Lean Mean Machine- 8/10. Great run but may want further than the 1200m. Will be interesting to see how things pan out in the autumn.
4th- Written By- 7/10. Overraced in the lead and couldn't go with them at the business end.

Race 6 - Empire Rose Stakes (1600 METRES)

1st- Shillelagh- 9/10. Cant knock the winner, her second Group 1 win on Derby Day after she took out the Kennedy Mile (1600m) last year.
11th- Amphitrite- 6/10. Inconclusive as she didn't see daylight in the straight. Adds an interesting dimension to the Kennedy Oaks (2500m).

Race 7 - 3:50PM AAMI Victoria Derby (2500 METRES)

1st- Extra Brut. 10/10. Exploded at the 300m mark to overhaul his rivals, providing Darren Weir with his first win in the race.
2nd- Stars Of Carrum- 9/10.
6th- Aramayo- 8/10. Covered a stack of ground and did well to finish as close as he did.
12th- Thinkin' Big- 3/10. Poor. Was one of the first horses beaten.

Race 8 - 4:35PM Kennedy Mile (1600 METRES)

1st- Best Of Days. 9/10- Was given a brilliant rails hugging ride by Craig Williams and with just 52kg he provided James Cummings with his third winner of the day.
2nd- Le Romain. 9/10- Nothing wrong with the performance from the 2016 winner, who always just seems to be in the mix in the big races. The 5.5kg told in the end.
3rd- Peaceful State 8/10- The brother of Weekend Hussler is absolutely flying at the moment and a win is just around the corner.
4th- Land Of Plenty 8/10- Great run given that he was wide and back for most of the race. He reeled off the fastest last 800m, 600m and 400m sectionals.
10th- Hartnell 4/10- Struggled with the big weight and hard track.
14th- Tom Melbourne 2/10- Tom is struggling of late and finished 12 positions away from runner-up.
