TAB have introduced a new betting product called a Trio. We will explain what a Trio bet is and how it works.

A few years ago, TAB introduced a bet type called a Duet. It required punters to select two of the three placegetters in any order and was available in races that had 8 runners or more. 

The TAB has now come up with a Trio bet, which allows punters to select three or more runners in a single bet and if they run first, second or third in any order the punter wins. 

You may be thinking that a Trio is exactly like a Box Trifecta, but this is not the case. A Trio is only one bet compared to a three-runner Box Trifecta, which is six individual bets. For example, when you select three runners in a Box Trifecta (let’s assume numbers 1, 2 and 3 to keep it simple), you are taking six unique combinations for your bet to win; these combinations in order from first to third are, 1-2-3, 1-3-2, 2-1-3, 2-3-1, 3-1-2 and 3-2-1. 

The above example has six possible outcomes meaning that your bet costs $6 for 100% of the dividend. This is also known as having a full unit. 

With a Trio bet, the combinations above are combined into a single bet, which means that a Trio will only cost $1 for a full unit. 

The emergence of TAB’s Merged Pool Technology has allowed this bet type to be created. It allows bet types on an individual race to be merged into a single pool. In the case of a Trio, the bets are merged into the Trifecta pool. This creates more liquidity, which in turn leads to greater dividend stability. Due to Merged Pool Technology, approximate dividends can be shown on Trifecta and Trio bets to give punters a greater indication of what the payout may be on their selection(s) if successful.

WHAT IS TRIO?

Pick a minimum of three runners in a race, and if they run 1st, 2nd and 3rd in any order, you win! 

ISN’T THAT A BOX TRIFECTA? 

When you select runners 1, 2 and 3 into a Box Trifecta, you are taking six unique combinations for your bet to win (1-2-3, 1-3-2, 2-1-3, 2-3-1, 3-1-2, 3-2-1), as a result there are six possible outcomes and your bet costs $6 for a full unit (100% of the dividend). 

Alternatively, a Trio combines these combinations into the one outcome, so for the exact same bet (numbers 1, 2 and 3) a TRIO will only cost $1 for a full unit. Regardless of how many runners you take, a full unit of a TRIO will always cost a sixth of a full unit of a Boxed Trifecta.

WILL TRIO AND TRIFECTA HAVE THE SAME DIVIDEND? 

No, dividends will be dependent on several factors including; runners’ odds, percentage of bets on the winning combination from both bet types, pool size, etc. 

HOW WILL I KNOW PRE-RACE WHETHER IT’S BETTER TO TAKE THE TRIO OR TRIFECTA?

Thanks to Merged Pool Technology (MPT) we can now offer approximate dividends pre-race on your Trifecta and Trio bets, providing you with a better indication on which bet type will give you a higher dividend at the time of placing the bet.

WHERE CAN I FIND HOW MUCH IS IN THE TRIO POOL VS THE TRIFECTA POOL?

IS TRIO AVAILABLE WITHIN ALL TAB JURISDICTIONS?

For now, Trio will be available on all local thoroughbred, harness and greyhound races for S-TAB and NSW TAB customers only.
