Tosen Basil to miss the Melbourne Cup

The Darren Weir-trained Tosen Basil has been withdrawn from the Melbourne Cup nominations due to poor performance.

The Japanese import has failed to fire in both lead-up races he has contested and a decision to withdraw him has been made.

His first look at Australian tracks was in the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) where he finished second-last, seven lengths behind Grunt.

He then improved to finish a close-up second to Homesman in the Group One Underwood Stakes (1800m).

From there, things went downhill for the seven-year-old.

Connections were unhappy with his effort in the Group One Caulfield Stakes (2000m) where he finished eight lengths behind race winner Benbatl in second-last place.

Given the benefit of the doubt, he then contested the Group Two Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) where a forward showing was expected.

However, it wasn’t to be and the big bay horse finished third-last more than nine lengths in arrears of Ventura Storm where he failed to run on.

With the Weir-trained horse now out of Cup contention, the eight-year-old Nakeeta now moves to 24th in the order of entry and could possibly earn a start, despite finishing second-last in the Moonee Valley Cup, five lengths further behind Tosen Basil.

However, the winner of Saturday’s Lexus Stakes and the Victoria Derby can force their way into the field which would end Nakeeta’s hopes of a start, failing further withdrawals.
