Racing returns to Townsville

  • Townsville opens its gates after a 10-week mop-up
Townsville's Cluden Park track

After experiencing the worst floods on record, the Townsville Turf Club opens its gates on Tuesday April 9 for its first meeting in 10 weeks.

Townsville’s last race meeting was held on Australia Day (Saturday, January 26) and who could have known, the rain that started to fall late that afternoon, would continue to fall for the next 10 days straight and dump almost 1.5 metres of water on the North Queensland city, re-writing all the record books.

The Turf Club suffered badly at the hands of mother nature with extensive damage right across the course and amenities areas, leaving the track closed until now to undergo a mammoth clean-up.

Racing Queensland came on board to assist in the maintenance work on the track which even after the rain had stopped, was suffering from grub infestation that had to be eradicated quickly to avoid further damage to the turf.

In the meantime, two meetings set down for the Cluden Park track were transferred to Bowen with other North Queensland tracks taking on additional races to their meetings to assist with the backlog.

With track curator Trevor Woodham overseeing the clean-up, the track has recovered and is in race-fit condition.

After walking the track on Monday morning, I can confirm it is in pristine condition and will be set as a Good 4 before barrier rise in the first race of the day.

De-mountable buildings have been erected and will be used as change rooms for the jockeys until the restoration work on existing buildings is completed while marquees are in place for both the public and members for the same reason.

The seven-race program gets underway at 1:34pm (AEST).
