Ballarat Cup Tips - clear standout on ratings

On benchmark (BM) ratings, there is a clear standout in Saturday’s $500,000 Ballarat Cup (2000m) at Ballarat.

The David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-prepared Fifty Stars is one of four horses to have gone more than 10 lengths above BM in his past four starts, but unlike the other three to have posted one strong figure, Fifty Stars has done it three times.

The son of Sea The Stars went 14.9 lengths above BM when 6th in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and he backed that up going 10.6 lengths above BM in the Epsom Handicap (1600m) which I’ve rated and has proved to be one of the strongest rating races throughout the Spring Carnival.

Franking that Epsom form behind Kolding, Fifty Stars then went to the Kennedy Cantala (1600m) and was runner-up to Fierce Impact who was previously defeated by Kolding.

Fifty Stars went 6.4 lengths above BM in that race before stepping up to 2000m in the Mackinnon Stakes where he went 13.4 lengths above BM when beaten 3.3 lengths by Magic Wand.

It was a bit of a grinding effort in the Mackinnon, and while he was outsprinted on the bend and early into the straight, he was doing his best work late and finished off strongly.

If this race was run at weight-for-age, I’d just about declare Fifty Stars, but it’s run under handicap conditions and he has to carry 60.5kg while most of the field carry between 56kg and 54kg.

Of the opposition, I think Chris Waller’s Another Dollar is trending the right way and represents value down on the minimum weight.

She was 2nd in the Rosehill Cup (2000m) and then weakened 200m from home to finish 2.5 lengths from Oceanex in the Matriarch Stakes (2000m).

Her last start was run quicker to and from the 600m, and despite finishing further back, she actually improved her BM rating by 3.5 lengths.

She peaked fifth-up in her first preparation and then won fifth-up in Brisbane in her last campaign, and she looks set to post a strong figure again.
