Bendigo

Midweek racing is at Bendigo on Wednesday, for an eight-race card on a Good 4 rated track. It looks to be a good betting program and my best bet comes up in race two.

Race 2 - 1:35pm Bet365 Odds Drift Protector BM64 Handicap (1400m)
This looks a real race in three but the horse I was keen to back was SPRING BOUQUET. The former New Zealander made her Australian debut at Flemington in a Benchmark 64 a fortnight ago. She was vetted before the start sat wide with cover but when going for a run at the top of the straight, got baulked and checked badly. I thought she had every right to give up after that interference but she picked herself up like a good horse and attacked the line, running the fastest last 200m of the entire meeting, while also running the fastest last 1000m and 1200m of the meeting. She ran a huge 3.4 lengths above benchmark for her final 200m and second-up, I think she should be a clear favourite. Cuban Toonite went to the line with her in that Flemington race and did sit outside the leader which isn’t easy to do and win, especially at Flemington so I have to add some merit to the run but I thought Spring Bouquet was clearly on top here.

Race 5 - 3:20pm Wild Plumbing Three-Years-Old Handicap (1400m)
This looks a deep 3YO race and I can understand why the early favourite Royalty has been well supported but I was happy enough to play around him and back the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained ASTRAEUS. He comes through the sizzling hot Cranbourne maiden that has produced The Lifeline (metro winner since), Wild Choice (won by 6L at Mornington), Pure Legend (metro winner since) and Anubis (metro winner since). He went to Echuca at his next start and was $2.90 into $2.25 but just did too many things wrong off a slow early tempo. He was well supported again last start at Benalla, starting $2.30. He jumped slowly and the second-favourite Not Alone led easily and it looked a tough task but he really knuckled down in the straight and was dynamic the last furlong, He couldn’t have been more impressive, running 8.7 lengths quicker than class benchmark while also running the best figure of the day of 0.1 lengths below the overall benchmark. He beat Not Alone by 1.3 lengths, with a massive six-length gap to third which indicates he is a very smart animal. The stable is flying, with 10 winners from their last 50 runners with a positive ROI of 153 percent. You can make a case for six of the nine runners but the horse I was most concerned about was Need New Friends. He started a hot favourite on debut off the back of a very good trial and he showed an outstanding turn of foot to record a soft victory, running the fastest last 200m and 400m of the meeting. The figures aren’t there because he comes through a slowly run race but I’ll be saving on him at the price.
