Cairns Tips May 16 - Janel Ryan gelding can win second-up today

Steve Bennett in Free Tips 16 May 2019
  • Second-up and looks ideally placed
  • Suggested Stake: 3 Units to win
Cairns racing at Cannon Park Thursday

We have a dry track (at the moment) but there are showers hanging around so stay alert. I found one who won’t want any heavy rain to fall and should the track remain dry, he is a big chance second-up today.

Race 6 - 4:05PM AJ HACKETT CAIRNS BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1250 METRES)
Atherton trainer Janel Ryan will make the 90-minute drive down to Cairns today with her stable in winning mode lately. Here, she saddles-up COUNT CUMANI who has won previously in similar company and although seeing Cannon Park for the first time, looks in the mix from a favourable draw. Previously trained by Matthew Dunn, the lightly-raced five-year-old has only been with the Ryan stables a few months and this will be his second start for his new trainer. Coming off a four-month break (while transferring north), he made his North Queensland debut at Townsville two weeks ago where he lined up in a class 4 over 1200m. Unfortunately, he came up against an in-form Imanui who put two lengths on them like all $2.30 chances should. However, his performance was full of credit just the same. He drew gate 12 (of 14) and missed the jump, settling near the tail, and was caught three-deep to the turn where he was six and seven-deep. Aside from the winner, he finished strongly and was only 1 length back from runner-up Molongle Dream (who carried 4kg less than ‘the Count’). This is a little easier today and this time he draws a gate, jumping from a more favourable gate 4 where he should be settling a little closer to the pace. Brad Pengelly climbs aboard for his first ride on the gelding and I am expecting a big improvement from his last run. He is a winner second-up and with a clear run to line here, he will be finishing strongly and prove hard to hold out.
