Canterbury Tips May 22 - Waller’s gelding can upset the favourite

  • Confidence rating: 90%
  • Suggested stake: 2 units to Win

Midweek racing in NSW takes place at Canterbury Park with a seven-race card to be run on a Good 4-rated surface.

Here is my best bet for Canterbury today:

Race 5 - 3:10PM ANZ BLOODSTOCK NEWS HANDICAP - HEAT OF THE RISING STAR (1250 METRES)
There has been strong support for the James Cummings-trained Medovina in this event, and while I think she’s arguably the best suited and conditioned for Wednesday’s contest, I don’t think she likes racing at Canterbury. The daughter of Exceed And Excel has had three unplaced runs at the track with two of them being her biggest career defeats having finished 5.2 and 5.9 lengths from the winner. First-up this campaign, she worked home strongly at Kensington and looked the winner before peaking in the final 100m and finishing 0.3 of a length from Anna’s Joy. She then returned to Canterbury and was given every chance, but she failed to quicken in the straight as she has done both previous times at Canterbury. Her only two wins have been first and second-up, so being third-up on Wednesday, there is nothing to suggest she will go any better here. That leaves some value to be found in the event and I believe the race comes down to two main chances – Chris Waller’s METAMORPHIC and the Gary Colvin-prepared Forever Newyork. Each have shown a liking for Canterbury, and both have run much quicker time at the track and trip on Heavy tracks than Medovina has at the track and distance on a Soft 6. Gun apprentice Robbie Dolan was aboard Forever Newyork when that galloper resumed with a 3rd placing in quick time (1:13.20) at this track and trip, but Dolan now takes the ride on Medovina and that’s a concern for me. Metamorphic has won and placed four times from six starts at the track while also running good time previously (1:13.77). His only unplaced run at the track was on a Heavy 9, and after watching all of his replays, I’m convinced he prefers to race on top of the ground where he can get comfortable in her stride. He’s been tuned up for this with an impressive 897m barrier trial victory over Ringerdingding who lines up in Saturday's Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup at Eagle Farm. Metamorphic looked very strong at the end of the trial and should be ready to go over 1250m first-up.
